Betting on the Philadelphia Eagles (-2.5)

The Philadelphia Eagles had their three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday with a stinging 24-23 loss to the Detroit Lions. Matt Prater kicked a 29-yard field goal with 1:28 remaining to give the Lions the morale-boosting win and in the process hand Carson Wentz his first-ever NFL loss. The Eagles will look to get their season back on track when they take on the Washington Redskins this coming Sunday.

For the Eagles to record the much-needed victory against Washington, they will need to execute much better on the offensive end. The Eagles committed two turnovers in the final three minutes of their game against the Lions, including Wentz’s first career interception. Prior to that pick, Ryan Mathews had a costly fumble that helped set up Prater’s game-winner. In addition to those miscues, the Eagles also yielded 14 penalties for 111 yards in the loss to Detroit.

The Eagles will take comfort in the fact, however, that even with their sloppy play, they still had a fantastic opportunity to pull off the victory down the stretch. Much of the credit must be given to Wentz who produced another solid performance for the Eagles on Sunday. He completed 25 of 33 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns against the Lions. Wentz had a 102.8 passer rating in that game. He will look to punish a Washington defense that’s allowing 392.0 total yards per game this season, seventh-worst in the NFL.

Betting on the Washington Redskins (+2.5)

The Washington Redskins extended their winning streak to three games with a gritty 16-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. It was another solid victory for the Redskins, who are now just one game behind the division-leading Cowboys in the NFC East race. To everyone’s surprise, it was Washington’s defense that took center stage in Sunday’s win. They held the Ravens offense to just 125 yards after halftime. Joe Flacco simply had no answer for the Redskins’ D as he was sacked a whopping three times.

Washington’s defensive masterclass was quite a shock considering the Redskins entered the game with the league’s 29th-ranked defense. They had allowed 108 points in their first four games. The Redskins will need to bring that same kind of defensive intensity if they are to beat Philadelphia this coming Sunday. The Eagles are eighth in the NFL in scoring, averaging 28.8 points per game this season.

That being said, the Redskins will still fancy their chances of grabbing the win this coming weekend as they have fared extremely well against the Eagles at home of late. The Redskins have won in each of their last two home games against the Eagles. The Redskins have covered the spread in both of those outings.

Writer’s Prediction

The Redskins (+2.5) stretch their unbeaten run to four games with a narrow 24-21 victory.
