Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies (39-67)
The Philadelphia Phillies’ rare five-game win streak is well beyond them now, as Thursday marked their third-straight loss since that streak by falling to the Los Angeles Angels, 5-4.
The four runs scored by the Phillies against the Angels were the most they’ve generated during their three-game slide. Although, all four of those runs came in the second inning of Thursday’s loss.
Philadelphia is in for a tough three-game series in Mile High ahead versus the 62-win Rockies. Fortunately, Vince Velasquez (2-6, ERA) is on tap to give the team a spark this Friday. The 25-year-old righty is coming off his best start of the season, holding the Braves scoreless through seven innings of work this past Sunday.
However, Velasquez was roughed up by a more potent offensive team before his latest performance as well. He lasted just four innings after giving up four runs and two homers to the AL-leading Houston Astros on July 24.
Betting on the Colorado Rockies (62-47)
Star third baseman Nolan Arenado led the Colorado Rockies to another win, albeit in unusual fashion.
Arenado drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give his Rockies a 5-4 win over the New York Mets on Thursday. It was the third time this season that he provided a walk-off victory for his team.
Colorado’s prolific offense did just enough to prevail victorious, as the team’s other key players kept their hot bats going; Charlie Blackmon and Mark Reynolds each had a homer to give them a combined 48 home runs for the year. Adding further depth in the batting order as well is standout catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who made his Rockies debut by getting two hits off the Mets.
Pitching won’t be a concern for the Rockies this Friday, as Kyle Freeland (11-7, 3.71 ERA) is penciled-in to start the three-game homestand against Philadelphia. Freeland came out with winning decisions in each of his last three starts.
The Rockies shouldn’t be intimidated by the visiting Phillies whatsoever either, as they’ve won three of their four meetings this season against the worst team in all of baseball.
Writer’s Prediction
The Rockies (-153) cruise to a 6-2 victory.
