Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies (+190)
The 2016 campaign for the Philadelphia Phillies (69-83) is all but disappointingly over, but there’s still time for them to play spoilers to the rest of the MLB’s playoff hopefuls. The Phillies for that matter, are one of the hottest teams in the league right now, winning four of their last five games. They defeated the Chicago White Sox, 8-3, in their series finale on Wednesday night.
They will look to keep the momentum going later tonight when they face the New York Mets at Citi Field. Starting for Philadelphia in the opening game of this four-game set is Adam Morgan (2-10, 5.57 ERA). He allowed one earned run over 4.1 innings with four strikeouts and two walks in a no-decision Friday against the Miami Marlins. The Phillies still won that game, 4-3. The Phillies have now won two of their last three games with Morgan as their starter. Morgan has been pitching well of late, posting a 1.96 ERA over his last four starts.
Morgan can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Phillies’ offense to pick up the scoring slack as well against the Mets. They have scored a whopping 31 runs over their last five games. Leading the way for Philadelphia is the sizzling Odubel Herrera. He is batting .522 (12-of-23) over his last seven games with two homers and six RBIs. Herrera is 6-of-22 against the Mets at Citi Field this season with a homer and three RBIs.
The Phillies are 4-6 in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the New York Mets (-220)
Things are going from bad to worse for the New York Mets as they crashed to their third consecutive defeat with a gut-wrenching 4-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Ender Inciarte hit a tie-breaking RBI groundout in the ninth inning and robbed Yoenis Cespedes of a walk-off home run to power the Braves to the shocking three-game sweep. With the loss, the Mets are now one game behind the St. Louis Cardinals for first place in the NL wild-card standings.
With the Mets struggling mightily right now, the pressure is on Seth Lugo (4-2, 2.35 ERA) to deliver a great start for New York tonight. He has been a god-send for the Mets who have been plagued with injuries this second half of the season. Since he was inserted into the starting rotation last August 25, he is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA. In fact, Lugo has beaten every NL East team except for the Phillies. The right-hander has found success in the majors with his five-pitch weaponry, namely the two-seam fastball, four-seam fastball, slider, curveball and change-up.
For the Mets to grab the all-important victory tonight, it’s crucial that their hitters pull their weight on the offensive end. The New York offense will bank on Asdrubal Cabrera to carry them through this evening. With his first-inning long ball on Wednesday, he just set a new club record for home runs as a shortstop (21). Cabrera leads the Mets in hits (134) this season. He is 1-of-3 in his career against Philadelphia starter Adam Morgan with a homer and one RBI.
The Mets are 5-5 in their last 10 home games. They are pegged at +900 to win the National League pennant this year.
Writer’s Prediction
The Mets (-220) edge past the Phillies, 4-2.
