Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies
Jeremy Hellickson (12-9, 3.57 ERA) is having a blast of late and he’ll look to continue his excellent form when he steps on the mound later tonight facing the Mets.
Hellickson hasn’t allowed a run over his last two starts, stretching 15.1 total innings. That includes a complete game shutout of Miami in an 8-0 win versus Miami last week. Thus far this month, Hellickson boasts of a 2-1 record and a 2.30 ERA in four starts while limiting opponents to only .208 batting average. Philadelphia is 4-1 in Hellickson’s last five home starts.
The Phillies, however, can’t afford to just sit back and watch Hellickson carry the team. Hellickson was bombarded by the Mets the last time he faced them so it would be important for Philly’s offense to cobble up some runs tonight.
First baseman Tommy Joseph and Odubel Herrera have been Philadelphia’s top performers at the plate over the last week. Joseph went 9-for-18 with a couple of blasts in his last six games. Herrera, on the other hand, has gone 10-for-24 with also two homers during the same stretch.
Betting on the New York Mets
A Gabriel Ynoa start is the type of thing that happens when you have an injury-riddled rotation like the Mets. New York is hoping Ynoa would fill in just fine for the hurt Noah Syndergaard, as the 23-year-old righty pitches against Philadelphia.
Philadelphia’s a team Ynoa must be lucky to be up against considering that the Phillies are among the poorest hitting team in the majors. Philadelphia is second last in the National League with a .239 batting average this season.
As of their own offense, the Mets have the history with Hellickson to believe they’ll get to the streaking pitcher. Hellickson was rocked by the Mets’ hitters in a 12-1 win on August 27, scoring five runs (including two homers) on seven hits in just four innings.
Yoenis Cespedes might be cooking another one of his specialties against Hellickson, as he is 6-for-14 with three home runs and six RBIs in his career opposite the Philly righty. Also watch out for Asdrubal Cabrera, who is 7-for-18 lifetime against Hellickson.
