Betting on Roger Federer

Second seed Roger Federer stormed into the Wimbledon last 32 with a comfortable 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win against American Sam Querrey. It was a superb performance from the Swiss maestro who needed just one hour and 26 minutes to record the straight-sets victory.

[sc:Other240banner ]Federer, who improved to 3-0 against Querrey, blasted 26 winners and won 41% of his receiving points. What proved to be the difference in the match, though, was Federer’s incredible serve. Federer won 79% of his first serve points against the American.

Next up for Federer is a third-round showdown with unseeded Sam Groth. The 33-year-old will fancy his chances against the Australian as he is 1-0 against Groth in their head-to-head matchup. The world no. 2 defeated Groth at the US Open last year, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

For Federer to defeat Groth once again, he needs to continue his excellent net play. Federer has been extremely successful in his forays to the net in this tournament, winning 41 of his 55 net points (75%) in the first two rounds thus far.

Federer is 9-1 in his last 10 matches.

Betting on Sam Groth

Sam Groth

Sam Groth barged into the third round of Wimbledon with a solid 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (6) victory over good friend and housemate James Duckworth on Thursday. It was an impressive performance from Groth who needed two hours and seven minutes to complete the straight-sets win. With the victory, the Australian advanced to the round of 32 at Wimbledon for the first time in his career.

Things are bound to get tougher, though, for Groth as standing in his way in the next round is Wimbledon legend Roger Federer. The seven-time Wimbledon champion has been unstoppable on grass this season, winning all seven of his matches on this surface thus far.

For Groth to record a major shock against Federer, he will need to continue his excellent play on the service end. He converted 68% (80/117) of his first serves against Duckworth with the Australian winning 59 of his 80 first serve points. Groth’s net play was also impressive in that match, winning 37 of his 72 net points against Duckworth. Groth must bring the same kind of aggression this coming Saturday if he is to score a massive upset against Federer.

Groth is 8-2 in his last 10 matches.

Writer’s Prediction

Federer (-3,000) wins in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4.
