Roberta Vinci barged into the semifinals of the 2015 US Open with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win over Kristina Mladenovic. It was a fantastic performance from Vinci, who needed two hours and 32 minutes to record the three-set victory. With the win, Vinci advanced to a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time in her career.
Things are bound to get tougher, for Vinci, though, as standing in her way in the next round is the red-hot Serena Williams. Vinci is 0-4 lifetime against Williams. In those four meetings, the Italian didn’t win a single set.
For Vinci to record the massive upset this time around, she needs to continue her excellent return play and put pressure on Williams’ serve. Vinci won 41 percent of her receiving points against Mladenovic with the 32-year-old converting four of her 15 break point chances. In this tournament thus far, Vinci has converted 21 of her 47 break point opportunities for an incredible 45 percent success rate.
Vinci will be licking her chops at the prospect of facing a Williams serve that looked somewhat shaky in the quarterfinals. The top seed put just 58 percent of her first serves in play in the quarterfinals.
