Hawaii Sports History
Surfing, also known as he’enalu in true Hawaiian dialect, dates all the way back to 1769. However, the true pioneer of the sports is a guy by the name of Tom Blake. In 1925, he drilled holes in his board to reduce the weight. By 1932, we had the integration of balsa wood, a much lighter material. By 1934, Hawaiians began tapering the tail end of their boards and the following year Blake created the fixed tail fin. Twin fins hit boards around the 60’s, but the innovation medal has to go to Blake on this one. In any case, surfing takes off on the islands, which in time, leads to the Bonzai Pipeline contest on the beautiful North Shore of Oahu along with numerous other world cup and sponsored competitions.
Definitely best known for their surfing culture, Hawaii also has a pretty decent football history as well. The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors have won their WAC conference championship four times (1992, 1999, 2007 and 2010). The team has also competed in countless bowl games with an overall bowl record of 11-16.
The state also played home to the National Football League’s Pro Bowl, hosted at Aloha Stadium, from 1980-2008, 2011-2014 and from 2016 to the present day.
The islands have also produced numerous professional athletes scattered throughout the United States in various sports, but mostly football. The most famous current Hawaiian football player would have to be Marcus Mariota, who played his college football at Oregon and is now the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans.
