Betting on Toronto FC (+115)
Toronto FC suffered a rare loss in their last home game as they fell 1-0 to Montreal. That was their first loss in the last nine games (7-1-1), and just second home loss of the season. They are 7-3-2 at home on the season, and have given up just nine goals (second-fewest in the league). The Eastern Conference leaders recovered quickly, though, as they got a 2-1 road win over Chicago last time out. Star striker Jozy Altidore continued his sizzling form, his sixth in his last eight games.
Reigning MVP Sebastian Giovinco missed that match due to muscle strains, which were expected to keep him out for at least a month. However, the Italian maestro could make a quicker-than-anticipated comeback in time for the visit of New York. Giovinco, who’s having another MVP-caliber season with 16 goals and 13 assists, would obviously be a huge addition to the Reds’ attack.
The last time the Red Bulls visited Toronto, Giovinco scored an incredible goal which gave the Reds a 2-1 win and sent them to the playoffs. Toronto are unbeaten in their last three home games against New York, and have scored back-to-back wins in the last two years.
Betting on the New York Red Bulls (+200)
The Red Bulls just can’t be beaten at the moment. New York is now at 11 games undefeated – five wins, six draws – a new club record. That has seen them climb to within two points of current East leaders Toronto, although they have played one more game. However, the Red Bulls suffered a rare home setback in a 2-2 draw against D.C. United last Sunday.
Bradley Wright-Phillips got on the scoresheet for the fourth match running against United, though, and has returned to the top of the MLS goalscoring charts with 18 goals. Wright-Phillips scored a hat-trick in less than 30 minutes in their last meeting with Toronto, which New York won 3-0 at home.
Road form continues to be a major issue for the Red Bulls. They’re just 2-6-7 away from Red Bull Arena this season. However, one of those two wins did come in their most recent outing against Vancouver, and their last road loss came all the way back on Independence Day at the hands of NYCFC.
Writer’s Prediction
Altidore continues his fine scoring form and leads Toronto (+115) to a crucial 2-1 win over the rival Red Bulls.
