Betting on the Tulane Green Wave
Tulane split its first two games of the season. The team opened the year by easily dispatching Grambling State, 43-14, but fell to Navy the this past week in a hard-fought battle, 23-21.
Adding to the frustration is the loss of quarterback Jonathan Banks, who got taken out of the game after landing his midsection awkwardly following a big hit. He’s 13-for-20 for 198 yards and three touchdowns this season, and will obviously be leaving a big hole in the offense. Johnathan Brantley will be the next guy in line should Banks sit the game out. The sophomore backup went 5-for-8 for 53 yards when he stepped in last week.
As per usual, Terren Encalade and Darnell Mooney, Wave’s top targets from 2016, will be the two main receivers. Both each have one TD grab on the season, with the former also leading the team in receptions (eight) and receiving yards (89). Dontrell Hilliard, who currently has 181 yards from scrimmage in the two games (6.1 yards per carry/reception), will be aiding them from the backfield.
Wave’s defense is pretty suspect. They allow 18.5 points and 277 total yards per game, but their pass rush can only get to the opposing QB 3.5 times per game, which will certainly be deadly against the Sooners’ offense.
Tulane has lost 11-straight games as an underdog (4-7 ATS).
Betting on the Oklahoma Sooners
Week 2 saw the Sooners be masterful again. They also made college football’s first statement win of the year with their 31-16 domination of Ohio State, which was also a good upset win.
Obviously, it’s Baker Mayfield’s play that’s driving this well-oiled machine. The senior has an almost unprecedented 83.6 completion percentage in two games (46-for-55), and has six TDs with no interceptions. We should see him have his way against Tulane this weekend.
Among the guys helping the star QB in the wings are big play pass-catchers Jeff Badet (19.2 yards per catch) and Mark Andrews (17.4 yards per catch), a versatile tight end who can effectively line up and play in the slot and on the outside. Freshman running back Trey Sermon is still raw, but he’s doing decently with that rawness (113 yards on 4.7 yards per catch).
On defense, meanwhile, look for Ogbonnia Okoronkwo to keep being the most disruptive force. The defensive end-slash-linebacker has 2.5 sacks 4.5 tackles for loss, and he powers the Sooners’ ability to only give up 11.5 PPG and have opposing QBs only throw for 138.5 yards per game, while also just completing 56.5 percent of their passes.
