Betting on the Washington Redskins (+3.5)

Things are going from bad to worse for Washington as it stumbled to its second consecutive defeat on Sunday with a gut-wrenching 27-23 loss to Dallas. The Redskins now start the campaign 0-2, the first time that has happened in Jay Gruden’s three seasons as the team’s head coach.

They will look to get their season back on track when they lock horns with the New York Giants this coming Sunday. For the Redskins to notch their first win of the season, they will need to get a much-improved performance from quarterback Kirk Cousins. He hasn’t looked like the quarterback who led Washington to a division title in 2015, throwing just one touchdown and three interceptions through the Redskins’ first two games.

It’s important for Washington as well to improve on its faltering ground game against New York. The Redskins rushed for just 82 yards on 17 carries against the Cowboys on Sunday. Washington is currently 25th in the NFL in rushing offense, averaging just 68.5 yards per game this season. It won’t get any easier for them against a Giants defensive line that’s allowing just 71.0 yards per game on the ground this season, sixth-best in the entire league.

The Redskins are 3-0 SU and ATS in their last three road games.

Betting on the New York Giants (-3.5)

The New York Giants will head to their showdown with Washington with momentum on their side after eking past the New Orleans Saints, 16-13, on Sunday. Josh Brown hit a 23-yard game-winning field goal as time expired to send the Giants to their first 2-0 start since 2009. It was a historic victory for head coach Ben McAdoo who joined Dan Reeves (1993) and Joe Alexander (1926) as the only coaches to win his first two Giants assignments.

Key to New York’s hot start has been their incredible defense. The Giants are fifth in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing just 16 points per game this season. They held the high-powered Saints offense to just 288 total yards on Sunday. The Giants even buckled down on their third-down defense, with New Orleans converting just three of their 13 third-down chances.

They will need to bring that same kind of defensive effort this coming Sunday if they are to record their third win against Washington. The Giants’ secondary, in particular, needs to man up against Washington’s lethal aerial attack, one that’s averaging 339.5 passing yards per game this season (third-best in the NFL). New York is 20th in passing defense this season, allowing 237.0 yards per game this campaign.

Regardless of that fact, the Giants will still fancy their chances of grabbing the win this coming weekend as they have fared extremely well against the Redskins at home of late. The Giants have won each of their last four home games against the Redskins. The Giants have covered the spread in three of those four outings.

New York defeated Washington, 32-21, in the corresponding fixture last season. Eli Manning starred in that victory, completing 23 of 32 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He had 386 passing yards in the win against New Orleans, marking the 40th time in Manning’s career that he topped the 300-yard passing mark.

The Giants are 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS in their last five home games.

Writer’s Prediction

The Giants (-3.5) maintain their perfect record with a comfortable 28-14 victory against the Redskins.
