From one Yannick to another. That’s the early narrative for reigning French Open champion in the tournament, as he will face Yannick Maden in the second round just days after sending Yannick Hanfmann home. Will Nadal destroy Maden? Or will Maden score a gigantic upset this Wednesday?
Going into the event, the sportsbook lists Nadal as the clear (really clear) favorite, with -8000 odds to defeat Maden, who is listed at +3000.

Betting on the Yannick Maden (+3000)
Maden booked his spot in the second round of the 2019 French Open, thanks to a 7-6 (7-0), 7-5, 6- 3 win over Kimmer Coppejans on Monday. You could say that Maden is on a roll right now, as he’s on a four-match winning streak. He topped the French Open qualifiers by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the finals of the qualifiers, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. None of Maden’s wins over that stretch resembles anything that Nadal should be fearful of. Still, it’s better for Maden to be riding a wave of momentum heading into a showdown with the King of Clay. Maden put 68 percent of his serves in against Coppejans and won 57 percent off them. He also broke Coppejans eight times on 17 chances, while also committing just 28 unforced errors to 56 by his opponent. His ability to control his miscues will be key against Nadal, who will be looking to pounce on the relative inexperience of the German.
Betting on the Rafael Nadal (-8000)
Nadal barely broke a sweat in his first round match, punishing a French Open qualifier in the form of Yannick Hanfmann to the tune of a 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 victory on Monday. Nadal displayed an all-around mastery of tennis on the clay surface against Hanfmann, as the Spaniard scored five aces, put 29 percent of his first serves in and broke Hanfmann six out of 10 times. Hanfmann was seemingly rattled by Nadal’s play, as he recorded 34 unforced errors to only 16 by the legend. It’s the kind of result one would expect when an 11-time French Open champion gets pitted against someone who’s ranked No. 184 in the world. Nadal’s form in the first round is a bad omen for Maden, who only have a couple of days to figure out how to stop a rampaging herd of Buffalo in Nadal with just a stick. At some point, Nadal is going to be challenged in this year’s French Open, but it won’t likely come against Maden.
Writer’s Prediction
Nadal wins in three sets.
