PGA Golf is more lucrative that ever. The best players on the planet become millionaires even before sponsorship endorsement checks roll in. Even those who are not relatively great find ways to earn hundreds of thousands of dollars on the green throughout their careers, and with this year’s edition of the PGA Championship arriving early (moved from August to May here in 2019), so will their pay day. And what will that look like?
The total guaranteed purse for the 2019 PGA Championship will just be the same as last year, when the amount was a tantalizing $11 million. Geez PGA, ever heard of inflation and cost of living increases? Prior to that, in 2017, the total prize was set at $10.5 million – $5 million more than the $10 million mark in 2016. Indeed, the PGA Championship has come a long way in terms of prestige – and finances – since it started in 1916, when the total purse was only $2,500.
Brooks Koepka reigned supreme at the 2018 PGA Championship, taking home a thick sum of $1.98 million after scoring 264. Tiger Woods finished right behind Koepka with a 266, enough for him to pocket $1.88 million. Scott Brown finished 80th last year, but was paid $18,600 for his 289 score.
