2015 US Open Experts Predictions

Sports Illustrated

Richard Deitsch Roger Federer Serena Williams
S.L. Price Andy Murray Serena Williams
Stanley Kay Roger Federer Serena Williams
Jon Wertheim Novak Djokovic Serena Williams
Elizabeth Newman Andy Murray Serena Williams
Jamie Lisanti Andy Murray Serena Williams

[sc:Other240banner ]Sports Illustrated’s army of tennis experts has spoken so let’s all sit down and listen at what Richard Deitsch and five others have to say. Of these six analysts, only Deitsch and Kay picked Roger Federer to win in the men’s draw. Deitsch didn’t expound on his pick, but Kay said that he’s very impressed at R-Fed’s recent form. The future Hall of Famer has reached the final round in each of his last three tournaments. That includes a win over world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in Cincinnati.

Surprisingly, only one from the group believes that tournament favorite Djokovic will reign supreme in Flushing Meadows. That’s Jon Wertheim, who considers Djokovic’s recent losses in Cincinnati and Montreal as nothing but “minor hiccups”, and shouldn’t be a reason to underestimate the Serb’s chances of taking home his second US Open title this year. After all, Djokovic is priced at EVEN to win this event.

As for the rest, S.L. Price, Elizabeth Newman, and Jamie Lisanti are all going for Andy Murray. Seeing Murray beat Djokovic in Montreal early this August has apparently fueled Newman’s decision to choose the Brit as his projected winner.

For Price, Murray’s penchant for performing well on hardcourts should serve the 2011 US Open well. Predicting a winner on the women’s side, meanwhile, proved to be a far easier one for these tennis experts as all six of them unanimously picked Serena Williams to seize her fourth grand slam title this year in New York.

Bleacher Report

Expert Men’s Pick Women’s Pick
Lindsay Gibbs Andy Murray Serena Williams

Over at Bleacher Report, featured columnist Lindsay Gibbs wrote a series of early US Open predictions back in July, containing some juicy insights. Perhaps the most intriguing ones are her picks to win the singles events. For the men’s side, Gibbs avoided taking the chalk route (Djokovic) and went for Murray. Echoing SI’s Price’s sentiments, Gibbs tells that Murray’s comfort level in playing in New York and on hardcourts—plus the fact that he just recently overpowered Djokovic—are big factors in her decision to go for the Brit.

And just like the folks at SI, Gibbs has found it hard to choose another player than Williams, even going as far as anointing the 33-year-old American as the greatest of all time. Williams is currently installed as -150 favorite to win in the US Open.

The Roar

Expert Men’s Pick Women’s Pick
The Roar Novak Djokovic Serena Williams

Australian sports media outlet The Roar has also released its predictions for the US Open singles predictions. For the men’s side, the site projects Djokovic to beat Federer in the final.

Instead of treating Djokovic’s recent setbacks as signs of a disappointing US Open campaign, The Roar believes that the Serbs’ losses in Cincinnati and Montreal will only give the world No. 1 a burning desire to dominate the competition in New York.

Speaking of domination, that’s what The Roar is expecting of Williams to do in Flushing Meadows. History beckons for Williams, as a US Open victory will tie her with Steffi Graf for most grand slam wins (22).

Top Bet

Expert Men’s Pick Women’s Pick
Top Bet Roger Federer Serena Williams

Let us get this out of the way early and predict 34-year-old Roger Federer to walk away with the trophy at the tournament’s conclusion.

Federer has won the event five times thus far in his illustrious career, and based on his strong play this year, copping a sixth trophy in Flushing Meadows this year isn’t as far out of reach as what his +600 odds suggests. As for the women’s bracket, we’re not going to kid ourselves here and say that a player not named Serena Williams will win it all. After all, that would sound like us picking Bethe Correia in a rematch with Ronda Rousey.

Williams has been unmatched this year, as evidenced by her wins in the 2015 editions of the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon. Furthermore, Williams will enter the 2015 US Open on the heels of a victory in the Cincinnati Masters.
