2015 U.S. Open Sleeper Picks

Milos Raonic

[sc:Other240banner ]Young Canadian Milos Raonic played the best tennis of his life at this year’s Australian Open, the only other Grand Slam on hard court. He reached the quarterfinals before bowing out to world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-2. Raonic followed that performance with a semifinal loss to Stan Wawrinka at Rotterdam in February and a semifinal loss to Roger Federer at Indian Wells in March, both on hard surfaces.

Raonic is starting to emerge as a young contender this year. He’s has a sweet price of +4,000 to win his first Grand Slam title.

Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios has all the talent in the world. Unfortunately, immaturity has prevented him from playing up to his full potential. The Australian routinely allows his frustration to show in matches, most notably in a four-set loss to Richard Gasquet at Wimbledon where he seemed to have sudden outbursts with his opponent on serve.

When on his game, though, Kyrgios can be close to unstoppable, especially on serve. He has won 88 percent of his service games on hard surfaces this season, firing off 179 aces along the way. But he suffers from a lack of a reliable receiving game, winning just 13 percent of return games on hard surfaces this year. Assuming Kyrgios can use his skill while remaining calm and collected, his price of +10,000 to win the U.S. Open will reap great rewards for his backers.

Venus Williams

If there’s one woman who could stop Serena Williams, it’ll probably be her sister Venus (+6,000). The older Williams sister has experienced a resurgence of sorts this year. She made the quarterfinals at the Australian and Miami Opens, as well as the semifinals of the Doha Open. Venus also played a tough match against her sister at Wimbledon, losing 6-4, 6-3.

Serena has difficulty playing against her sister, taking the match easy on numerous occasions in the past. A possible quarterfinal matchup at the U.S. Open could have Venus on the winning side before using the momentum to win the entire tournament.

Timea Bacsinszky

Timea Bacsinszky has been on a tear in the past three Grand Slams this season. She had a competitive French Open semifinal match world No. 1 Serena Williams, which Bacsinzky lost in three sets. Then, she made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, falling to the surging Garbine Muguruza 7-5, 6-3. Bacsinszky has the return game capable of causing some powerful servers problems. She’s won 42.4 percent of her return games this season, while converting 47.2 percent of break points.

Bacsinszky is +8,000 to win the U.S. Open.
