Favorites – Jordan Spieth and Jason Day
The hottest golfer this season returns for the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. Jordan Spieth is having quite a year, winning the first two majors of the season. He lucked out at the British Open, missing the playoff for the Claret Jug by just one shot. Spieth finished tied for fourth in missing the third major of the season.
[sc:Golf240banner ]Spieth finished 49th in this event last year. He could be up for much better results this time around with plenty of improvements in his game. Spieth is ranked first in total strokes gained (2.283) and scoring average (68.839) on tour this season.
Jason Day is another golfer having a superb season. He finished tied for fourth at the British Open along with Spieth. Day rebounded nicely, winning the RBC Canadian Open by one shot against Bubba Watson. He’s ranked second in driving distance (311.5 yards), which should help him keep a low score at Firestone Country Club.
Sleepers – Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk
Here comes Lefty. Phil Mickelson may not have had the best of runs in the past two majors, finishing 64th at the U.S. Open and 20th at the British Open. But a tournament at Firestone Country Club may just be what he needs to revitalize his season. He’s ranked in the top four in two of his last three non-major tournaments.
Mickelson has been very surprising whenever he’s flying under the radar. He finished second at last year’s PGA Championship after a less-than-stellar season. He also finished second at this year’s Masters Tournament. Count Mickelson out with caution; he’s due for another big surprise this year.
Jim Furyk may not be able to hang with the top golfers in the majors, but he’s one consistent fella. He’s made 12 of 14 cuts this season with five top 10 finishes and a win at the RBC Heritage to boot. Furyk has the tools to turn some heads at this year’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational. He’s ranked 11th in driving accuracy (70.96 percent) and seventh in total strokes gained (1.426) on tour.
Long Shots – Kevin Na and Brendon Todd
Kevin Na hasn’t finished in the top 20 in four straight tournaments thus far. Don’t expect him to remain in the rut he’s in, though. He made three straight top 15 finishes before the disappointing run, including placing in the top 10 twice. Na has six top 10 finishes overall this year, including placing ninth at his last World Golf Championships tournament appearance, the Cadillac Championship.
Brendon Todd has played excellently in his last three tournaments. He placed in the top 15 in all three, including cracking the top 10 at the Greenbrier Classic with an 11-under par 269. Todd has the tools to make a big win at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational this year. He’s ranked seventh in driving accuracy (71.76 percent) and fourth in strokes gained in putting (.644), which should help him keep a low score at Firestone Country Club.
