The Fall Classic is upon us and Game 1 was a thriller. It became the longest game in World Series history, with the Royals winning on a walk-off sac-fly by Eric Hosmer in the bottom of the 14th inning for the 5-4 victory on Tuesday.
If Game 1 is an indication of how close this series will be, then it’ll probably give us some trouble picking whether the Mets or the Royals would win the Commissioner’s Trophy. [sc:MLB240banner ]The folks over at CBS Sports are pegging how evenly matched these two teams are. All five experts pegged the series to go the full seven-game distance, while three out of five picked last year’s runners-up the Kansas City Royals to win it all this season.
The experts at CBS Sports also gave their picks for the World Series MVP with Lorenzo Cain garnering two pick. But the Royals’ center fielder didn’t get off to a fast start in Game 1, going just 1 for 6 with a run scored.
CBS Sports’ Matt Snyder, one of two who picked the Mets, pegged Daniel Murphy to win the MVP award/ But he didn’t get to extend his MLB record seven straight postseason games with a homer in Game 1. Axisa’s pick of Jeurys Familia blew a save in the ninth inning, allowing a homer from Alex Gordon.
Grave Brown is looking pretty smart after Game 1. His pick for the World Series MVP, Eric Hosmer, hit the game-winning sac-fly to give the Royals a 5-4 victory on Tuesday night.

Verducci states that the Mets concede athleticism, bullpen and defense to the Kansas City Royals. But all those are negated as he believes that New York owns the advantage in starting pitching in every game of the World Series. Verducci’s pick for MVP is none other than Matt Harvey, who has plenty of weapons in his arsenal to carve up opponents.
Harvey struggled in Game 1, though. He allowed three earned runs in just six innings. But Harvey did show his big-game potential in his NLCS start against the Chicago Cubs, allowing two earned runs while striking out nine in 7.2 innings. Watch out for Harvey should he take the mound for a possible Game 5.
The rest of the crew over at Sports Illustrated seem to favor the Mets. Of the three Jaffe pegged another pitcher to win the World Series MVP in ace Jacob deGrom. The Mets’ ace has been very solid in the postseason, going 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his three starts.

A collection of experts over at ESPN made their predictions for the 2015 World Series; 17 of 26 of them picked the Royals to win it all this year. The Royals’ Game 1 victory has their backers brimming with confidence that they could win games despite having the disadvantage in starting pitching.
The bullpen was the hero in Game 1 with Luke Hochevar, Wade Davis and Ryan Madson combining for three scoreless innings. Meanwhile, probable Game 4 starter Chris Young added three scoreless innings as he was credited the victory. He struck out four.
However, playing five extra innings in Game 1 should have the Royals’ bullpen in a tough spot. They may be overworked should they be called on in the latter games while the Mets’ starters will be fresh coming off a long layoff.
