Roger Federer

Eight time champion Roger Federer headlines the Gerry Weber Open field. He’s been dominant in this tournament his whole career, most recently winning the past three editions and finishing second in 2012. The 34-year-old Swiss is coming into this tournament on the heels of a semi-final defeat to Dominic Thiem in Stuttgart last weekend.

Stuttgart was Federer’s first action since Rome after withdrawing from Roland Garros with a back injury. He should have shaken out all the rust by the time he steps onto the court at the Gerry Weber Open.

Kei Nishikori

Kei Nishikori enters this tournament after bowing out of Roland Garros in the Round of 16. He’ll be hard-pressed to excel at this tournament considering that he’s been terrible on grass in his career. The Japanese ace is a career 24-18 on the surface and is yet to enter the quarterfinal of Wimbledon in his career.

While Nishikori will surely want to win this tournament, he’s more in it to familiarize himself with the surface that has been his bane. He still possesses plenty of power and quickness that could propel him toward a solid tournament run, especially in the pretty shallow field entering the Gerry Weber Open.

Sleepers

David Goffin

David Goffin plays a backhand

David Goffin is coming off a big outing at the French Open, making the quarterfinals only to lose to a surging Dominic Thiem. The Belgian should be able to ride that momentum when he opens his grass court season at Halle, Germany. The 25-year old hasn’t been too good on grass courts in his career, going 9-12 in 21 matches but should be able to do well considering his recent run.

In Goffin’s last action on grass, he reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2015. He may have ironed out the kinks in his game to suit the intricacies involved in playing on the surface.

David Ferrer

David Ferrer is once again a live sleeper in the upcoming Gerry Weber Open. After all, he is one of the best players in the world to never win a major. The Spaniard remains one of the most athletic and agile players on the ATP Tour, which could help his bid for a title at Halle. Grass has been his second-best surface next to clay. He’ll be ready to open his grass court season in style with a deep run at the Gerry Weber Open.

Long Shot

Andreas Seppi

Andreas Seppi finished runner-up in this tournament a year ago, losing to Roger Federer 7-6(1), 6-4. The Italian could have a more difficult time to even reach the final of this year’s tournament, considering he’s gone 2-3 in his last five matches. However, don’t discount the 32-year-old just yet. He’s been at his best on grass courts in his career with .562 winning percentage. Expect him to make some waves at the Gerry Weber Open.
