Ramos-Vinolas, a clay-court specialist, has had a relatively tough time adjusting to hard courts, winning just nine of 20 matches on the said surface this season. But it was encouraging to see him gain some rhythm at the Chengdu Open, where the 28-year-old Spaniard overcame the likes of Dominic Thiem and Grigor Dimitrov before deciding to choke in the final against Karen Khachanov. Nevertheless, it’ll be interesting to see if Ramos-Vinolas can replicate that success in Shanghai.
Gilles Muller
Muller’s form looks really good right now. He’s currently preparing for a quarterfinals date with Nick Kyrgios at the on-going Japan Open. Prior to reaching that round, the 33-year-old Luxembourgish took care of Marcos Baghdatis and Tomas Berdych, who both succumbed to Muller in straight sets.
Whether Muller wins it all or eventually loses in Tokyo, betting on him for the upcoming Shanghai Rolex Masters wouldn’t be an absolutely-crazy decision. It could actually earn you a few bucks.
Kevin Anderson
Anderson followed up his quarterfinal finish at Chengdu with a quick exit at the Japan Open thanks to Jiri Vesely. Still, you never know which type of Anderson will come out playing in Shanghai. It could be the one that defeated top-ranked players like Nick Kyrgios, Richard Gasquet, Bernard Tomic and Dominic Thiem earlier this season.
