Favorites
Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic
It isn’t a complete surprise to see Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic installed as favorites to win this week’s Swiss Indoors tournament. Wawrinka and Raonic are the two highest-ranked players in the field and they are playing some excellent tennis of late. Wawrinka has already captured four titles this season, including the US Open last month. He will look to improve on his showing here after suffering a shock first-round defeat to big-serving Ivo Karlovic last year.
If there’s one player, though, who can derail Wawrinka’s Swiss Indoors bid, it’s got to be Raonic. He is back up to No. 4 in the world rankings, the career-high pinnacle he first reached in May last year which made him Canada’s highest-ranked singles tennis player in history. It has been a remarkable season for Raonic who reached his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon last July. His last appearance in Basel came in 2014 wherein he was upset in the quarterfinals by teenager Borna Coric.
Sleeper
Fernando Verdasco
Verdasco’s run in Stockholm was cut short in the first round, where unheralded wild card Mikael Ymer crushed him in two dominant sets. Nevertheless, the 32-year-old Spaniard is an intriguing sleeper to watch out for in the upcoming Swiss Indoors tournament. Verdasco has shown that he can still hang with the big boys, beating Grand Slam champions Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka earlier this year. He was able to translate that excellent form into a winner’s trophy, capturing the Bucharest title back in April. Look for Verdasco to bounce back in a big way this week.
Long Shot
Taylor Fritz
One long shot who can definitely make a run at the Swiss Indoors title this week is Taylor Fritz. He loves playing in these indoor tournaments as evidenced by his 4-1 record in this type of venue this year. In the past 14 months, Fritz has climbed 608 spots in the Emirates ATP Rankings to No. 70. Fritz is only 14-20 overall this season, including 12-14 in hard-court matches.
