Experts Picks and Predictions for the 2016 Australian Women’s Singles

Bleacher Report

[sc:AUS15-250 ]Writing for Bleacher Report, columnist Merlisa Lawrence Corbett published a thorough preview of the 2016 Australian Open, including her take on the Women singles. For Lawrence, Serena Williams is the woman to beat in the tournament. Williams, who is +175 to win the 2016 Australian Open women’s singles, is coming off a 2015 season in which she won three-straight Grand Slam tournaments before falling short for a fourth one in the U.S. Open, where she lost to Roberta Vinci in the semifinals.

Williams has an eye-popping six Australian Open titles thus far in her illustrious career and Lawrence is just one of the throng of experts who believe that she would begin the Grand Slam season by raising the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup anew in Melbourne.

International Business Times

Jason Le Miere of the International Business Times, meanwhile, shares the same prediction as Lawrence. In a piece published on January 6, Le Miere selected Williams as his pick to win the women’s side in the Australian Open. While Le Miere points out that Williams’ troublesome knee is a point of concern, he also noted that other contenders are like Simona Halep, Garbiñe Muguruza and Maria Sharapova are nursing different injuries.

Speaking of which, Muguruza is priced +2,000 to win Down Under, while Halep and Sharapova have odds of +700 and +600, respectively.

2016 Australian Open Women's Singles Expert Picks and Predictions

A Middle East media giant, The National asked three of its sports writers of their own predictions for the upcoming Australian Open. In his prediction blurb, reporter Ahmed Rizvi predicted Victoria Azarenka to win her third Australian Open title this year. Azarenka is coming off an impressive win in the ATP & WTA Brisbane International early this month, defeating Angelique Kerber in the final, 6-3, 6-1. Like Rizvi, sports editor Jon Turner is putting his money on Azarenka.

Turner sees the Belarusian having a strong season after a couple of years battling injuries, beginning in Melbourne, where she has won the prestigious Grand Slam twice.
