Jeff Gutowski | Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart, AJ Allmendinger |
Jeff Gutowski of Fantasy Racing Cheat Sheet delves into the field of competitors heading to Sonoma Raceway next Sunday. While he did name plenty of capable drivers, we’ll take a look at the top three he highlighted.
Kurt Busch is Gutoswki’s pick to win this week’s race on the strength of his resume. The Steward-Haas Racing export has one win and seven top five finishes as he has led more laps than any other active driver on Sonoma Raceway. Busch is red-hot heading into the Toyota/Save Mart 350 after winning his first race of the season at the Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400 at Pocono.Up next is a gritty veteran Tony Stewart, who has won two races at Sonoma. He looked very good racing on a similar road course at Michigan a couple of weeks ago, which could have him primed for an excellent outing this coming weekend. Assuming that Stewart can use his excellence on road courses at the upcoming race, then he may be able to get a win to be eligible to make the Chase.
A.J. Allmendinger is another of Gutwoski’s sleeper picks to excel at this race as an excellent road course winner. Allmendinger will be all in heading into this weekend’s event as winning a road course race is his best bet to qualify for the Chase.

Ryan Rantz | Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick |
Ryan Rantz was also quick to share his thoughts heading into the upcoming Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma this weekend. He’s pegged three elite picks to fill up your betting cards as the favorites heading into the race.
As expected, Kurt Busch gets top billing as easily the best active driver at Sonoma. The 37-year-old driver has been stellar on the track with a championship (2011) and four top five finishes over his last five races. Over that stretch, Busch has the best driver rating, best average finish (4.4) and the second best average running position (eighth).
Jimmie Johnson should also be given consideration at this race. He won at Sonoma in 2010 and has been second to none in terms of his consistency on the track. The Hendrick Motorsports export has seven consecutive top 10 finishes at Sonoma, compiling the best driver rating, best average finish (5.6), and best average running position (7.6) and has led 101 laps.
Rantz also touches on Kevin Harvick as one of the drivers to beat at Sonoma. He’s a capable road course driver and has a very powerful car that could help him in long runs. Harvick isn’t necessarily the best road course driver, but having a car as powerful as his should have him contending for another victory in 2016.

Randy Chambers | Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney |
Randy Chambers of Sports Chat Place is ready with five picks heading into this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. He’s pegging Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney and Jimmie Johnson as excellent picks for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 this weekend.
Logano picked up his first victory this season at the FireKeepers Casino 400 a couple of weeks ago. He should still be red hot entering this race, especially after finishing fifth in last year’s Toyota/Save mart 350.
Busch has been excellent with nine straight top 10 finishes this year, including a victory at last Sunday’s Axalta “We Paint Winners”400. He won at Sonoma in 2011, and was runner up in last year’s Toyota/Save Mart 350.
Johnson is another contender to win this race, especially considering his track record. He won this race back in 2010 and has finished no worse than ninth in his last seven appearances at Sonoma. It’s only a matter of time before he gets back on track.
Larson and Blaney are two of Chambers’ dark horse picks this weekend. They’re both excellent and talented up-and-comers ready to take it to the next level. The two have all the talent in the world, but are yet to win their own championships. Perhaps this could be the race where they make a name for themselves.
