Serena Williams (-360) vs. Simona Halep (+280)

250x130-250FREE-6-16-16

Since the start of May at the Madrid Open, there’s arguably been no better female tennis player than Simona Halep. The Romanian sensation has won three titles and lost only four matches since, having gone 8-2 against top-20 opponents in the process. Her 6-2, 7-5 fourth-round win over Carla Suarez-Navarro was a little too close for comfort, though, and that might come back to bite her in the semis against none other than Serena Williams.

Williams has once again proven that she still has the rightful claim of the top spot in the world rankings by hammering in a total of 42 aces and facing just one break point in the U.S. Open, granted that she has faced some very weak competition along the way. Nevertheless, Serena owns a 7-1 lifetime record against Halep (with four-consecutive wins to date), and we’re likely just about to see her in her peak form in the tournament this Tuesday as she continues her bid for a record seventh U.S. Open women’s singles title in the Open era.

Writer’s Prediction: Halep puts up a tremendous fight, but fails to dispatch Williams (-360) in a three-set thriller.

Angelique Kerber (-800) vs. Roberta Vinci (+500)

A straight-sets victory over Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko sent Roberta Vinci back to the quarterfinal round of the US Open for the fourth time in five years. There’s no question that the Italian loves to play in Flushing Meadows, as all her quarterfinal appearances in Grand Slam tournaments were attained in The Big Apple.

However, 21 unforced errors from that win is not a good sign for Vinci, who’ll face a determined Angelique Kerber this Tuesday. The German, who’s primed to steal the No. 1 spot in the world rankings from Serena Williams, has been on more of a tear in the tournament thus far, refusing to give up a single set to her opposition for the past four matches. And even though the two have played each other to a 2-2 stalemate in the WTA Tour, their last head-to-head encounter happened three years ago, and Kerber is in much superior form as we speak over last year’s U.S. Open finalist.

Writer’s Prediction: Kerber (-800) makes quick work of Vinci in straight sets to advance to her third Grand Slam semifinal this season.

Caroline Wozniacki (-300) vs. Anastasija Sevastova (+220)

A lot of people had written off Caroline Wozniacki and Anastasija Sevastova entering the U.S. Open, yet here they both are in the semis of the tournament after having to deal with their respective personal problems early on.

Wozniacki has been shelved for three months this year due to an ankle injury, but Flushing Meadows – where four of her seven previous Grand Slam semifinal appearances took place – has once again been kind to the Dane. She just eliminated crowd favorite and World No. 9 Madison Keys in straight sets for her second victory over a top-10 opponent in the tournament (World No. 10 Svetlana Kuznetsova being the other victim).

But perhaps the bigger feel-good story right now is being crafted by Sevastova, who became the first Latvian female tennis player since 1994 to advance to a Grand Slam semifinal by edging out British dark horse Johanna Konta (6-4, 7-5) in the fourth round. Sevastova quit playing professional tennis in 2013 only to return to the WTA in January of 2015, and she appears destined to make a name for herself on the tour once more. Her massive 7-5, 6-4 upset of World No. 3 Garbine Muguruza in the second round of the tournament speaks loudly indeed about her renewed resolve and passion to become the next rising star in the WTA.

Writer’s Prediction: The Cinderella run continues for Sevastova (+220) after battling with Wozniacki for three closely-contested sets.
