Daniil Medvedev
The 65th-ranked Daniil Medvedev is first on the list. There’s considerable amount of momentum in his hands, as evidenced by once again moving up in the world standings.
He just had a good outing at the Ricoh Open, where he racked up four straight wins to reach the quarterfinals and gave Ivo Karlovic a nice fight fight before getting bounced. Though only two matches above .500 on the year (14-12), he’s been rather smooth on grass-held events in the past three years (13-4_.
Nicolas Mahut is his opponent for the Round of 32s. Based on their recent performances, Medvedev’s chances looks a whole lot better, as he has won four of his last five and Mahut has lost four of his last five.
Cameron Norrie
Cameron Norrie might be the darkest dark horse in the tourney. With a world ranking of 235th, the kid is certainly an afterthought in everyone’s eyes, especially in an event that has the likes of Andy Murray as the headliners.
What the 21-year-old will bring is a respectable record of 38-16 in the last two years. It’s usually not good to sleep on a low-ranked player with this W-L card, since it’s possible that they can be just one breakthrough away from finally being a regular on the bright stages.
Norrie has nice size (6’2), balanced style of play, and an underrated coach in James Trotman.
Aljaz Bedene
World no. 54 Aljaz Bedene has a gigantic task ahead of him, as he will pitted against Andy Murray in the opening round. It can’t hinder us from labeling the guy as a great long shot to win the whole thing, though.
It’s considering the quietly productive campaign that Bedene is having, which once saw him move up several spots in the standings. The Slovenian is collecting one victory after another this season, and has now compiled a 36-11 record (23-0 outside the main tournaments).
This has been one of the hottest starts of his career, and a shocking run at a ATP title could be on the way.
