Serena Williams (-600) vs. Belinda Bencic (+400)
There are plenty of question marks surrounding Serena Williams heading into the the year’s opening Grand Slam. The 22-time Grand Slam champion has struggled mightily of late, losing in the second round of the Auckland Classic to unheralded Madison Brengle. She hit a staggering 88 unforced errors in that contest as she crashed out in her first tournament of the year.
Williams has been handed a tough draw as she will open her Australian Open campaign against the former world no. 7 Belinda Bencic. The Swiss star defeated Serena in their last encounter in the 2015 Canadian Masters, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. That being said, we can expect another monster showing from Williams this coming Tuesday. She has never lost before the round of 32 at the Australian Open and we don’t expect that to change with her match against Bencic.
Writer’s Prediction: Williams (-600) makes short work of Bencic to reach the second round.
Angelique Kerber (-500) vs. Lesia Tsurenko (+350)
If there’s one player in the field who can stop Serena here in Melbourne, it’s got to be Angelique Kerber. The German star had a memorable 2016 season, winning two Grand Slam titles en route to finishing the year as the world no. 1. She will begin her quest for a second consecutive Australian Open crown when she takes on Lesia Tsurenko later today. Kerber will fancy her chances in this first-round clash as she has fared extremely well against Tsurenko in the past. Kerber defeated Tsurenko, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, in their lone meeting in Sydney back in 2015.
Writer’s Prediction: Kerber (-500) wins in straight sets.
