FAVORITES
Dustin Johnson (+900)
Get used to seeing Johnson’s name on the list of favorites for any golf tournament this season, if you aren’t yet. That is despite the fact that he finished with just a T54 at the World Golf Championship-Workday, after firing a 78 in the fourth round. That’s the first hiccup by Johnson this season, and we’re not expecting a lot of that from the world’s No. 1 player today. Johnson has four top 10s, including a win at the Masters Tournament last November, in six starts this season.
John Rahm (+1200)
Like Johnson, Rahm didn’t have a terrific outing at the World Golf Championship-Workday, wherein he finished with just a T32 after going T13 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and a T5 at the Genesis Invitational. Rahm has five top 10s and hasn’t missed a cut in nine starts this season.
Justin Thomas (+1800)
Thomas recovered from a missed cut at the Genesis Invitational by going T15 at the World Golf Championship-Workday. He’s now 8 of 9 this season and has finished inside the top 10 four times.
HIGH-VALUE SLEEPERS
Tony Finau (+2500)
Finau is on a nice stretch, as he has finished inside the top five in three of his last four starts. The lone start over that stretch in which he didn’t break into the top 10, he still managed to finish solo 14th, which was at the World Golf Championship-Workday. Finau is currently sixth on the season in eagles (holes per) with an 80.0 average and third in scoring average with a nice 69.635 average.
Sungjae Im (+4000)
Im hasn’t won a tournament this season, but he’s also just missed the cut once in 15 starts. Of those starts, he’s made the top 10 twice and the top 25 seven times. Im is 11th this season with a 69.68 driving accuracy percentage.
LONG SHOTS
Brendon Todd (15,000)
Todd is coming off a T57 finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week. He’s been mediocre this season with just one top 10 in 13 starts, but he’s also missed the cut only three times — only once since The RSM Classic way back in November of last year.
Matt Kuchar (12,500)
The 42-year-old Kuchar has zero PGA Tour wins to date in 10 starts this season, and he’s also already missed four cuts. That being said, Kuchar is still worth at least a long look, as he’s a former champion of The Players Championship, having won the event back in 2012.
Writer’s Prediction
John Rahm wins the 2021 The Players Championship.
