If there’s one major PGA tournament that former World No. 1 Rory McIlroy is deeply aching for a win at, it would be this week’s Masters Tournament.
McIlroy has won all but one of the four major tournaments on the Tour, so his drive to finally don the green jacket this year is at an all-time high. Fortunately, a Masters win for Wee-Mac could very well happen, and here are a few reasons why.
For our coverage on a couple of other prolific golfers also set to tee off at Augusta beginning this Thursday, check out our primers for Jordan Spieth and Jason Day right after this.

Why Rory McIlroy Will Win the 2016 Masters Tournament
Mastery of The Masters
It’s true that Rory McIlroy has never won at Augusta in seven trips, but it’s not as if he was a lame duck in all those tournaments. He’s only been cut from The Masters just once (2010), and his finishes from the other years have been relatively solid. In those six other starts, McIlroy secured four top 20s and finished no worse than 40th-place. As a matter of fact, the Northern Irishman has seen his performance improve in each succeeding year since that T40 finish from 2012, with his T8 finish in 2014 and solo fourth last year as the latest evidence that he is indeed gradually climbing up The Masters’ rungs annually.
If that upward trend does hold true this week, then McIlroy’s prospects of finally winning the green jacket are definitely high. No wonder the oddsmakers pegged him at a cool +800 to win this weekend.
Roaring Aloud
“I feel like I’m a good enough player,” McIlroy said in a recent interview leading up to the festivities at Augusta National this week. “I feel like I’ve got everything I need to become a Masters champion. But I think each and every year that passes that I don’t, it will become increasingly more difficult. So there’s no time like the present to get it done.”
It sounds as if Wee-Mac’s a tad desperate for a win at the Masters, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If any, his determination to win at The Masters is doing him a huge favor by not taking his eye off the ultimate prize. He already opted to skip Augusta’s yearly par-3 contest, so you know his focus towards the real action at hand is definitely locked-in.
Plus, McIlroy is only 26 years of age, so he still has a ton of mileage ahead of him in the PGA Tour. Nevertheless, he isn’t content on settling for anything less than a tailor-fitted green jacket, and this 2016 does appear like the right time to finally get that suit made for his size.
“No Time Like the Present” Indeed
Even if he has yet to win his first start since returning from an ankle injury last August, McIlroy’s performance this season speaks well of his near-return to former glory. He only missed one cut out of seven starts this campaign and has four top-20 finishes, including a pair of top 5s from just this past March at Doral (T3) and Austin (solo fourth).
Even statistically speaking, the World No. 3 golfer is performing at a high level. McIlroy’s currently fifth on the PGA Tour in scoring average, seventh in strokes gained: tee-to-green and ninth in birdie average. With such an exemplary form of late, Wee-Mac’s quest for the elusive green jacket might finally get its fairy tale ending this weekend, alright.
