Tomas Berdych’s Edge (-450)
The good news: Tomas Berdych has reached his third-consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal. The bad news: He hasn’t looked too impressive during his run in Wimbledon. The No. 10 seed was taken to the limit by compatriot Jiri Vesely in the fourth round, as he needed five sets – 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(8), 6-7(9), 6-3 – to secure a spot in the last eight.
Berdych has also been taken to two four-setters in the tournament. He labored to a 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(2) win in the very first round against Ivan Dodig, and had another tough time against Alexander Zverev. His only straight-sets victory came against 35-year-old world No. 102 Benjamin Becker in the second round.
Berdych’s serve has been wobbly all tournament long. He’s been broken 10 times in four matches. Thankfully, his patented return game has been on point, which should give him the edge against Pouille. He’s won an incredible 23 return games already in his four matches. The four-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist – and one-time finalist – will also have the overwhelming edge in experience over Pouille.
Lucas Pouille’s Edge (+325)
The Lucas Pouille experience continues in Wimbledon. The 22-year-old has been a revelation in this year’s tournament. After ousting former top 5 player Juan Martin Del Potro 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 7-5, 6-1 in the third round, he outlasted No. 19-seed Bernard Tomic in five sets, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 to reach his very first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
It’s been quite a run for a player who came into Wimbledon with just two career Grand Slam wins, both coming in the French Open, and zero matches won on grass.
Pouille’s service game isn’t his strong suit, and that’s been evident in the tournament. He’s put in over 60 percent of his first serves just once in four matches. However, he has been able to power his way to some points on the strength of 45 aces in his last two matches. Pouille has also shown that he might be able to punish Berdych’s iffy serve. The Frenchman has won five return games in each of his four matches.
Writer’s Prediction: Berdych (-450) ends Pouille’s run as he outlasts the Frenchman in four sets.
