Betting on Serena Williams (-600)
Serena Williams, as most expected, was in for a grueling quarterfinal battle with Simona Halep. Williams came out locked and loaded, smashing in six aces and 13 winners to ultimately take the opening set, 6-2. But the next set was where Halep flipped the switch, as she dictated the pace through a barrage of forehands along the baseline and weathered all of Williams’ attacks to even things up at one set apiece. In the decisive third-set, it was the six-time US Open champion’s turn to respond and she did so with ease. Williams stayed aggressive, winning 82 percent (9-of-12) of her net points to eventually put away the Romanian, and secure a date with Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals.
The impending clash with Pliskova tonight is bound to be another tough hurdle for the history-seeking Williams. The Czech has looked solid in Flushing Meadows, losing just one set thus far. But Williams, who’s aiming to claim her 23rd Grand Slam crown, defeated the Pliskova in two sets during their lone encounter back in the 2014 Stanford Classic.
Plus, Williams’ service game still appears to be unstoppable. On average, she’s converted more than 80 percent of her first serves in the last five matches. That’s obviously not good news for the 10th-seeded Pliskova.
Serena is 27-4 overall in matchups between top-5 seeds during Grand Slam tournaments, which is the best winning percentage for a female player in the Open Era.
Betting on Karolina Pliskova (+400)
While almost nobody is giving a Karolina Pliskova a fair chance of beating Serena Williams, it’s worth taking into serious consideration that the former’s been on a fantastic run—10 straight wins—since bringing home the title at the Cincinnati Masters. In her route to glory there, she overcame the odds after consecutively beating Svetlana Kuznetsova, Garbine Muguruza and Angelique Kerber in the final three rounds.
What’s more, Pliskova made those three big-time victories look easy, as she won all of them without yielding a single set. The same could almost be said in describing how she’s reached the semi-finals stage of the US Open. The 10th-seeded Czech has only given up one set—to Venus Williams—in the previous five rounds. Her powerful serve, strong forehand and calm approach can attest to that success, and should put up some resistance to Venus’ sister.
Pliskova is 19-7 overall in hard-court matches this season.
