Betting on the Arizona Diamondbacks (+148)

In a season filled with disappointments, the Arizona Diamondbacks are just desperate to at least finish the year on a good note. They hope to start doing so in their interleague series opener with the playoffs-seeking Orioles tonight.

Making his fifth start since coming back up from the minors is Shelby Miller (2-12, 6.90 ERA). The struggle has been so real for the Arizona starter, who has not won a game for over two months now. Miller continued to pitch poorly in his last start, being torched by the Dodgers for four runs in 5 1/3 innings.

With Miller’s form looking ugly, the D-Back’s offense, which is averaging 4.66 runs this season, better have his back. You can expect the pair of Jean Segura and Paul Goldschmidt to carry most of the load here.

Segura currently leads Arizona in batting (.317), and holds a triple-slash line of .305/.370/.435 on the road.  Goldschmidt, meanwhile, has been very efficient in the last three games, going 5-of-14 with three homers and five runs batted in.

Arizona is 3-7 SU in its past 10 road games.

Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (-163)

The bleeding continues for the Baltimore Orioles. They enter tonight’s series opener with the D-Backs fresh off a four-game sweep at the merciless hands of the Red Sox. As a result, Baltimore’s grasp of the final AL wild card spot got even weaker, as both the Astros and Mariners are now less than two games behind them.

Yovani Gallardo (5-8, 5.77 ERA) can give the O’s a little bit of breathing room with an excellent start. He might just be able to pull it off, considering that the former Ranger owns a 7-2 record with a 2.32 ERA in 12 career starts versus Arizona. Gallardo, however, was burnt by the Rays in his last start, surrendering a total of six runs on seven hits.

Making things worse is the current state of the Baltimore offense. The O’s have posted no more than three runs in each of their last six games. Manny Machado and Mark Trumbo, the team’s top batters, have been relatively quiet.

Machado leads Baltimore in batting (.300), OBP (.350) and hits (181) this season, but has only gone 2-of-14 in his previous four games. Trumbo, who boasts a majors-best 43 home runs, is 2-of-16 in the same span. Both need to put up better numbers later, needless to say.

Baltimore is 3-7 SU in its past 10 home games.

Writer’s Prediction

Arizona (+148) wins, 4-2.
