Betting on the Boston Red Sox (-105)

The Boston Red Sox extended their winning streak to six games with a 5-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. Eduardo Rodriguez starred for the Red Sox in their latest win, striking out seven batters in 6.1 innings of two-run ball. With the victory, Boston moved five games clear of Baltimore at the top of the AL East standings. The Red Sox will look to carry the momentum of that huge win when they take on the Orioles in the third game of their four-game set tonight.

Pitching for the Red Sox in this ballgame is Clay Buchholz (7-10, 5.20 ERA). He was terrific in his last start against the Yankees, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks across six innings in a 7-4 win. The Red Sox have now won six of their last seven games with Buchholz as their starter. Buchholz is 5-3 with a 5.10 ERA in 10 career appearances at Camden Yards.

For the Red Sox to grab the all-important victory tonight, it’s crucial that their hitters pull their weight on the offensive end. The Boston offense will rely on the red-hot Hanley Ramirez to carry them through this evening. He is 11-for-27 in his last eight games with four homers and 11 RBIs. Also expected to contribute is the ever-reliable David Ortiz. He’s batting .320 over his last eight outings, and leads the team in homers (35), RBIs (121) and on-base percentage (.403) this season.

The Red Sox are 7-3 in their last 10 road games. They are pegged at +650 to win the World Series this year.

Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (-105)

Starting for Baltimore in this critical clash tonight is Ubaldo Jimenez (7-11, 5.94 ERA). He allowed four runs in seven innings last Friday in a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Orioles are unbeaten in Jimenez’s last four starts. He has been solid in the second half of the season, posting a 3.51 ERA since the All-Star Break. Jimenez will need to be at his best, though, if he is to record his eighth win against the surging Red Sox. He went 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA in two starts against Boston earlier this season.

Given Jimenez’s recent struggles against the Red Sox, the onus is on the Baltimore hitters to pick up the scoring slack tonight. Expected to lead the Orioles’ offense this evening is J.J. Hardy. He is 9-for-22 in his last seven games with four RBIs. Hardy is 8-for-24 in his career against Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz with three homers and five RBIs. Another player who’s expected to step up this evening is Adam Jones. He is 10-of-35 lifetime against Buchholz with two home runs and 11 RBIs.

The Orioles are 4-6 in their last 10 home games. They are pegged at +750 to win the American League pennant this year.
