Marcos Baghdatis

You can expect Marcos Baghdatis to give any opponent some trouble. It’s been a long while since he hoisted an ATP World Tour title—the last being at the 2010 Sydney International—but the drought could finally end at the inaugural edition of the Chengdu Open. The 31-year-old veteran from Cyprus has a strong liking to hard courts, as more than half of his total wins this season have been on that surface.

Also, Baghdatis heads into this tournament fresh off a decent finish (Round of 16) at the US Open. A better result should be in store for him since the level of competition in Chengdu is much lower.

Pablo Carreno Busta

Pablo Carreno Busta’s form looks pretty good right now. He’s won 10 of his last 13 matches, all of which were played on outside hard courts. That stretch included a Round-of-32 finish in New York and his first-ever ATP World Tour title at the Winston-Salem Open.

The road to glory there wasn’t easy, as the Spaniard had to go through a pair of top-ranked players in Pablo Cuevas (No. 20) and Roberto Bautista Agut (No. 16) to win it all. An upset-minded Carreno Busta should be able to make a lot of noise at Chengdu next week.

Kevin Anderson

Kevin Anderson hasn’t been the same ever since he underwent minor ankle surgery back in March. The South African veteran’s only 12-16 this season and remains in search for his first title of the year. A successful run at Chengdu is very possible for a player of his caliber, though.

Anderson, who has three career titles to date, had wins over Bernard Tomic and Dominic Thiem this past July at the Canadian Masters. Anderson was also oh-so-close from getting another big victory at the expense of a ninth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga during the third round of the US Open.
