Betting on the Toronto Blue Jays

A close 4-3 win over the Red Sox on Saturday gave the reeling Blue Jays some much-needed breathing room. Luck was also on their side later that day, as the Mariners, who were about the go toe-to-toe with them, lost to the lowly Athletics and got eliminated from playoff contention. They now have to get rid of the Detroit Tigers, who are also surging.

Toronto will start Aaron Sanchez (14-2, 3.06 ERA) on Sunday. The 24-year-old had a strong outing in his start last Tuesday versus the Orioles, striking out 10 in six innings. The Blue Jays won the game, 5-1.

Sanchez has started three games against Boston this season, pitching for 17 1/3 innings and allowing 10 earned runs. It’s a decent stat, but he has to play better. This Red Sox team is filled with hard-hitters that can go off any time.

Offensively, Toronto will be looking at rightfielder Jose Bautista to deliver the attack. The 12-year veteran is batting an impressive .345 versus David Price, Boston’s starter for Sunday. Bautista is also one of the team’s top guys in homers (22), runs (67), RBIs (69), and walks (44).

Betting on the Boston Red Sox

Boston (93-68) has gone on a bit of a slump since clinching the AL East, which is rather predictable. The Red Sox have lost four of their last five games.

They will send out David Price (17-9, 4.04 ERA) for his regularly scheduled start on Sunday, but reports have said that the ace will be limited in the game. The team did not specify on the amount of innings but it’ll likely be around five.

Out of all the Blue Jays’ hitters this season, Jose Bautista is the only one giving Price real problems. While Bautista is at the .345 batting mark, the rest of the team is at a dreadful .176.

Should Boston play their most productive hitters – David Ortiz, Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., etc. – as opposed to resting them for the playoffs, expect everyone to fire away on the young Blue Jays pitcher, Sanchez. Heading into the last day of the regular season, the Red Sox have firm position to finish as MLB’s season leader in runs (874), hits (1589), and RBIs (833).

Writer’s Prediction

The Red Sox win, 8-4.
