Betting on the Purdue Boilermakers (+24)
Enough is enough. Darrell Hazell’s tenure as Purdue head coach came to an abrupt end after the Boilermakers suffered an embarrassing 49-35 loss to Iowa on Saturday. Athletic director Mike Bobinski decided to yield the axe on Hazell who went just 9-33 in his career as Purdue boss. The pressure now is on interim coach Gerad Parker to get the Boilermakers ready for their crunch clash against Nebraska this coming weekend. Purdue is 1-9 SU and 6-3-1 ATS in its last 10 road games.
For Purdue to record a major shock and cover the huge 24-point spread against Nebraska, it needs to get a huge performance from David Blough. He put up incredible numbers against Iowa, but most of his 458 yards and four of his five touchdowns came after the Boilermakers fell behind 35-7 and the contest was all but over. Apart from Blough, the Boilermakers also need their defensive unit to step up its play this coming Saturday. They allowed Iowa to score touchdowns on five of its six opening-half possessions. They can ill afford a repeat of that display against a Nebraska side that’s averaging 453.8 total yards during their current six-game winning streak.
That being said, the Boilermakers will still fancy their chances against the Huskers as they have fared extremely well against them of late. Purdue stunned Nebraska, 55-45, in their lone meeting last season. Blough threw four touchdown passes and ran for a score in that upset win. The sophomore quarterback completed 65.1 percent of his passes and 6.4 yards per attempt in what was undoubtedly his and Purdue’s best game last season.
Purdue is 3-7 SU and 4-5-1 ATS in its last 10 games.
Betting on the Nebraska Cornhuskers (-24)
The Nebraska Cornhuskers will head to their Big Ten showdown with Purdue with momentum on their side after beating Indiana, 27-22, on Saturday. The Huskers survived a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Hoosiers to record their fifth consecutive series victory over Indiana. Nebraska is now 6-0 for the first time in 15 years.
Key to Nebraska’s strong start has been their incredible offense. The Huskers are 36th in the FBS in scoring, averaging 35.3 points per game this season. They have been deadly particularly in the final quarter, wherein they have outscored their opponents, 88-13. Nebraska’s endgame poise has enabled the Huskers to crack the Top 10 for the first time since 2011.
For the Huskers to preserve their unbeaten record against the reeling Boilermakers, they will need to quickly establish their ground game this coming Saturday. They are 27th nationally in rushing, averaging 220.5 yards per contest. Nebraska rushed for 152 yards in the win against Indiana. Terrell Newby was superb for the Huskers in that victory, rushing for 102 yards on 22 carries with one touchdown. He has rushed for 429 yards and four scores this season. Newby will be licking his chops at the prospect of facing a Purdue defensive line that’s allowing 264.3 rushing yards per game this season, 124th in the FBS.
Nebraska is 7-3 SU and 5-4-1 ATS in its last 10 home games. The Huskers are pegged at +5,000 to win the national championship this season.
