Betting on the South Carolina Gamecocks (+11.5)
A familiar atmosphere awaits Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp this Saturday, when he makes a return to Gainesville, home of his former team Florida. This time around though, the crowd won’t be by his side, as he tries to guide South Carolina into extending its win streak to four games. The Gamecocks were last seen unleashing a 31-21 punking of Missouri last Saturday.
Led by Jake Bentley’s precise passing, the Gamecocks were able to slice Missouri’s defense. Bentley went 22-for-28 for 254 yards and two touchdowns without an interception thrown. He’s now 3-0 as a starter and he’ll look to keep his clean slate against Florida’s pass defense that’s ranked best in the conference.
With that said, South Carolina will have to give Rico Dowdle a healthy serving of carries, especially after the running back rushed for 149 yards on 27 carries against the Tigers.
On defense, the Gamecocks intend to break through Florida’s porous offensive line, one that has allowed the second most sacks in the SEC. South Carolina sacked Missouri quarterback Drew Lock three times last Saturday.
South Carolina has been a fantastic play for spread bettors when it’s an underdog by at least eight points, having gone 5-1 ATS in the last six times (7-3 ATS in last 10) the Gamecocks found themselves in that situation.
Betting on the Florida Gators (-11.5)
The Gators got a taste of their own medicine in last week’s 31-10 loss to Arkansas with the Razorbacks limiting Florida to a mere 241 total yards. Speaking of medicine, that’s exactly what starting quarterback Luke Del Rio needs right now, as he’s about to miss the showdown the game this Saturday because of a shoulder injury he suffered against Arkansas.
With Del Rio out, Gators head coach McElwain has said he’ll start Austin Appleby but could also give freshmen Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask some reps. Appleby has one win in two starts this season.
With uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position, the Gators will likely ask for more production from their backfield, which is being led by Jordan Scarlett. The sophomore running back rushed for just 15 yards on five carries in the loss to Arkansas, but he still paces the team this season with 483 rushing yards and six touchdowns.
There’s nothing outstanding in South Carolina’s offense, which is just 126th nationally with 19.2 points per game, so Florida’s stop unit should be able to take care of business on its side of the ball. Florida is tops in the SEC against the pass (147.9 passing yards allowed per game) and fourth against the run (119.88 rushing yards allowed per game).
Florida is 3-1 ATS in its last four home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Florida (-11.5) wins, 28-16.
