Vanderbilt Commodores – March Madness Team Predictions, Odds and Preview 2017

Vanderbilt Commodores (Overall: 19-15, Conf: 10-8)

College Basketball News and Previews

Team Strengths:

The Commodores are one of the nation’s most prolific three-point shooting teams, as evidenced by ranking seventh overall in trifectas. Along with main options Matthew Fisher-Davis (13.6 PPG) and Luke Kornet (13.2 PPG), the team also has three other guys that chip in at least one trey per contest.

As shooters, of course, they are great at the charity stripe – 77.6 percent, eighth in the nation.

They also put up great efforts against the SEC’s best. In addition to being 3-0 against Florida this year, they also have a victory over Arkansas and South Carolina, and one where they almost upset Kentucky.

Team Weaknesses:

Vandy is another classic case of a team living and dying by the three. They may be above average from behind the line, but their overall shooting is just 43.1 percent, and they have 15 games this season where they shot below that mark.

Adding to that is their poor rebounding skills, particularly on offense, as they are ranked way down on the 309th spot in the stat’s rankings. Getting boards is as important as it can get down the stretch, especially for the Commodores, who’s three-point-happy ways create a ton of long-rebound scenarios.

Team Stats:

Category Stat Rank
Points Per Game 71.3 224th
Rebounds Per Game 34.6 130th
Blocks Per Game 3.7 84th
3-Point Percentage 37.7 61st
Free Throw Percentage 77.6 8th

Starting Lineup:

Position Name PPG
C Luke Kornet 13.2
F Joe Toye 6.4
F Jeff Roberson 11.0
G Matthew-Fisher-Davis 13.6
G Riley LaChance 10.5

Writer’s Prediction:

Vanderbilt edges Northwestern in the first round and barely losses in the round of 32
