NHL News and Predictions

Betting on the Tampa Bay Lightning (35-29-9)

Moneyline: -115

Head coach Jon Cooper can heave a huge sigh of relief as the Tampa Bay Lightning finally ended their three-game losing rut with a thrilling 6-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. Nikita Kucherov bagged his third career hat-trick for the Lightning who now trail the Bruins by just three points for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

They will look to sustain the momentum of that huge win when they lock horns with the Detroit Red Wings tonight. The Lightning will fancy their chances of doing just that as they have fared extremely well against the Red Wings of late. The Lightning have won nine of their last 10 games against the Red Wings, including each of their last five meetings. They have outscored Detroit, 14-8, in their first three games this season. This will be the first time this season, though, that the Lightning will line up against the Red Wings with Peter Budaj in front of goal. He finished with 28 saves on Thursday to earn his 29th win of the campaign.

Tampa Bay is 6-4 in its last 10 games.

Betting on the Detroit Red Wings (29-32-11)

Moneyline: -105

The Detroit Red Wings returned to winning ways Tuesday with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Anthony Mantha scored at 4:10 of overtime to lift the Red Wings to their third win in their last four games. Key to Detroit’s resurgence has been its excellent play on the defensive end. They have allowed just four goals over their last three outings. Jimmy Howard was excellent between the posts for Detroit on Tuesday, making 35 saves against the Canadiens. He started for just the fourth time since returning from a nearly three-month injury layoff last March 10.

Next up for the surging Red Wings is a clash with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Red Wings, who are about to miss the playoffs for the first time in a quarter century, will hope that Mantha can deliver the goals once again tonight. His game-winner against Montreal was his first goal since March 4 and only his second since February 12. The hometown boy has racked up a total of 15 goals for the Red Wings this season.

The Red Wings are 4-6 in their last 10 home games.

Writer’s Prediction

The Red Wings (-105) edge past the Lightning, 3-2.
