Ben Coley has included South African Louis Oosthuizen on his list of golfers who should be worth putting a wager on at The Northern Trust. Coley cites Oostuizen’s recent runner-up finish at the PGA Championship, which now means the South African has finished second in all four majors.
But despite Oosthuizen’s propensity to fall just short, it’s meaningful that he consistently remains in the mix atop leaderboards. Coley also notes how Oosthuizen has had a habit out of continuing to play well immediately after missing out on a major.
If he continues his strong play and a couple more breaks go his way, there’s a decent chance Oosthuizen’s +3,500 odds to win The Northern Trust finally pay out.
Sporting News
Bennett Bedford has offered up his fantasy golf picks for Sporting News and he included Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell as his mid-tier picks. Apart from fantasy, those two also fall in the mid-tier odds-wise, with Hoffman priced at an even +5,000 to win the tournament, while Chappell isn’t too far behind at +5,500.
Despite Hoffman’s disappointing showing at the PGA Championship, Bedford believes Hoffman will bounce right back to playing the great golf he’s shown all season. Bedford is confident Hoffman’s game should work well at Glen Oaks, and that he has a very good chance of grabbing his elusive first win of the season on the course.
Bedford is also high on Chappell, who Bedford notes has a similar style to Hoffman. Chappell has also had a fine season, in large part thanks to his strong driving. He currently ranks inside the top 40 in strokes gained off the tee. If Chappell’s putting doesn’t let him down, Bedford believes Chappell could be in for a great weekend.
Golf Digest
Golf Digest experts Joe Beall and Lucius Riccio have handed out their picks for the Northern Trust. But while Riccio’s picks were pretty much filled with the big names and favorites, Beall has come up with a couple of potential sleepers in Daniel Berger (+6,000) and Jason Dufner (+7,000), whom he predicted to finish 5th and 6th, respectively.
Both Berger and Dufner are outstanding approach players, with Berger ranked 5th and Dufner 12th in terms of approach-to-green. Beall seems to believe these types of players can prosper at Glen Oaks, and they certainly have the odds that can make betting on them worthwhile.
