2017 WTA Connecticut Open Predictions, Picks, Odds and Betting Preview

Agnieszka Radwańska was the last woman standing at the Connecticut Open a year ago. She comes back to New Haven looking to nail her second consecutive win here, but it’s not going to be easy with a slew of top-notch competition to deal with. Let’s not see a brief overview for some of the players you need to watch out for in this event.

Favorites: Agnieszka Radwańska, Dominika Cibulková

It doesn’t take much time figuring out why No. 10 Radwańska is considered a favorite to take home the title. She’s ranked 10th in the world and is also the defending champion of this event, having beaten Elina Svitolina in last year’s finals. Radwańska will begin her title defense in New Haven with fresher legs than her opponent, thanks to a first-round bye. It’s hard to question Radwańska’s motivation here, as she’s yet to win a title this year.

Behind Radwańska in the seeding is Cibulková, who’s also in search of her first tournament victory this year. Ranked 11th in the world, Cibulková is looking to bounce back from a sorry exit this week in Cincinnati, where she fell prey to Johanna Konta in the third round of the Western & Southern Open.

Sleeper: Caroline Wozniacki

Is it unfair to Wozniacki that she’s not even seeded in this tournament?  After all, it wasn’t that long ago when she reigned for four straight years in New Haven from 2008 to 2011. Well, actually, that seems to be a bit ancient in tennis years. But Wozniacki’s winning pedigree in this tournament should be enough to attract a big chunk of action from bettors. That’s not to mention that she’s 24-2 in this event. Before coming over to Connecticut, Wozniacki reached the quarterfinals of the Western & Southern Open but got ousted by Karolina Pliskova.

Longshot: Sloane Stephens

Stephens made quite a run in the Western & Southern Open, where she strung together four-straight victories to land in the semifinals. She beat No. 14 Petra Kvitova along the way but saw her run end against Simona Halep, who beat the American is convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-1. In any case, that was some general performance from a 70th ranked player. Stephens has flirted with success the past two tournaments he entered (she made the quarters of the Rogers Cup) so it could be a good time to lay a value bet on the 24-year-old.
