Betting on Roger Federer
It’s been a while since Federer last won a US Open title. The most recent one was in 2008, though, he almost added to his collection of five US Open titles last year, when he reached the finals and lost to Novak Djokovic.
At 35-years-old, R-Fed showed he’s still got it, as he’s already won three singles titles this year, including a Wimbledon championship. He nearly had another W in the recent Canadian Masters earlier this month, but failed to take home the title after losing to Alexander Zverev in the finals. Nevertheless, Federer is the overwhelming favorite in this match due to a legendary career that doesn’t seem to be anywhere close to ending.
Federer is 23-2 on hard courts this year and owns a 691-141 (.831) record on such surfaces in his career. Having fought and beaten the young Tiafoe previously (more on that later), Federer should come into this match with a better game plan.
Betting on Frances Tiafoe
As mentioned earlier, Tiafoe and Federer have met before. That was back in March, when the two players crossed each other’s paths in the second round of the Miami Open. As what was expected, Federer rolled past the Tiafoe. What wasn’t expected, however, was the level of resistance from the teenager, as Tiafoe forced a tiebreaker in the first set of a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 loss.
Perhaps Tiafoe has rid most of butterflies of that first encounter with the legend from his system, and will present a tougher performance against Federer this time around. Tiafoe showed readiness for the US Open, when he defeated the aforementioned Zverev in the second round of the Western & Southern Open before giving John Isner a run for his money in a loss in the succeeding round.
Tiafoe could also be looking to capitalize on Federer’s rust. Federer didn’t participate in the Western & Southern Open because of back trouble, which may or may not still be an issue in the US Open.
Writer’s Prediction
