Betting on the SMU (-5)
The SMU Mustangs take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, in the DXL Frisco Bowl. The Mustangs had a solid year, going 7-5 on the year. SMU didn’t finish the season strong, going 1-3 over their last four games of the regular season.
The SMU Mustangs were a good team in the American conference in 2017. SMU finished two games over .500 and improved a lot from last year’s 5-7 team. The Mustangs could have been better, but a one point loss to South Carolina on the road, stopped them from getting their biggest win of the season.
The SMU offense is explosive this year, averaging over 40 points per game this season. Led by quarterback Ben Hicks, Hicks has passed for 3432 yards, 32 touchdowns and nine interceptions this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, SMU is lacking this year. The Mustangs are allowing 35.5 points and 494 yards of total offense per game this season. The Mustangs defense must get stops if they are going to come home with Frisco Bowl Hardware.
Betting on the Louisiana Tech (+5)
Louisiana Tech finished the regular season 6-6, just barely making themselves Bowl eligible this season. The Bulldogs ended the year 2-2, with both losses coming against power five opponents, Mississippi State and South Carolina respectively.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs were able to get bowl eligible this season by beating Northwestern State the last game of the regular season, 52-24. The offense exploded at home for 497 total yards in the win.
The Bulldogs main offensive weapons this season have been the three headed monster of quarterback J’Mar Smith, running back Boston Jones and wide receiver Teddy Veal. If the three get going early, this game will be interesting late.
Defensively, Louisiana Tech allowed 26.7 points, and 409 yards of total offense per game this season. The Bulldogs run defense is allowing 177 yards on the ground per game this year.
Writer’s Prediction
Louisiana Tech is going to have their hands full with the Mustangs offense. Offensively, Louisiana Tech is going to score, but it is going to be a matter of who’s defense plays better late in this game. Take the Mustangs to cover and get the bowl win. Pick: SMU Mustangs (-5.0)
