Betting on the Vanderbilt Commodores (9-21 Overall / 0-17 Conference)
The Commodores just want a win any way they can get it. After striking out in each of their first 17 tries, they now have one chance left to get a win in conference play, but it will have to come at the expense of a powerful LSU squad. In its most recent game, Vanderbilt got destroyed by the Arkansas Razorbacks at home, 84-48. Vanderbilt is clearly missing Darius Garland, who saw his season end after playing in just five games due to a meniscus tear. The Commodores’ offense in the Arkansas game was nauseous to say the least. They shot just 21.4 percent from the field and turned the ball over 23 times. That can’t happen again against a very opportunistic defense of LSU. The Tigers like to pounce on every chance they can get, especially when their opponents are showing carelessness with the ball. The Commodores may be the worst team in the SEC, but they have been in close contests before against the elites of the conference. Back in January, they got edged out by then No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers in an 88-83 overtime loss at home.
The under is 9-1 in Vanderbilt in its last 10 games.
Betting on the LSU Tigers (25-5 Overall / 15-2 Conference)
These Tigers seem to have the penchant for being involved in heart-pounding games. They are coming off a 79-78 overtime win over the Florida Gators on the road on Wednesday, and they were able to come away with that victory thanks in large part to the clutch plays of guard Tremont Waters. He hit a game-tying 3-pointers from deep late in regulation and drilled an other triple in overtime, finishing the contest with 19 points and six assists to go with three steals in 35 minutes off the bench. The Vanderbilt game could be the last time Waters plays in Baton Rouge in LSU uniform, as he’s likely to declare for the NBA Draft and get selected, so expect him to be fully motivated to deliver the goods one last time in front of LSU fans. On the season, the sophomore is averaging 15.4 points and 5.8 assists per contest. He is also second in the conference with 3.0 steals per game. Expect him to be a defensive pest against the turnover-prone Vanderbilt unit. LSU is 12th in the nation with 81.7 points per game and second in the league with 41.2 boards per contest.
LSU is 3-1 against the spread (ATS) in its last four home games.
Writer’s Prediction
LSU wins, 81-65.
