SLEEPERS
Owendale (+600)
While not among the favorites to win at the 2019 Preakness, Owendale was a hot name to watch out for at the Pimlico Race Course as a sleeper. He turned plenty of heads when he won at the Lexington Grade 3 stakes back in April. Owendale finished third at the Preakness Stakes, which was a solid showing for such a horse with a relatively longer odds to win the first leg of the Triple Crown. Owendale has a true potential to win it all at Belmont Park based on how close he was of winning most of his past races. Apart from winning the Lexington and an allowance race last January, Owendale has also placed inside the top three of his other races except for the Risen Star Grade 2 stakes last February.
Everfast (+1000)
Like Owendale, Everfast had a strong finish at the Preakness Stakes. He placed second at the Pimlico Race Course for his first podium performance in five races. Everfast is still chasing for his first win since his victory at his inaugural race in August of 2018. Dale Romans, who trains Everfast, believes that his horse is very much capable of finishing better after seeing his horse perform at the Preakness Stakes. Prior to the Preakness Stakes, Everfast placed fifth at Pat Day Mile Grade 3 stakes, ninth at the Florida Derby Grade 1 stake, and eighth at the Fountain of Youth Grade 2 stakes. Then again, those are races stacked with talent, so Everfast can be forgiven a bit for coming up short. His showing at the Preakness Stakes should buoy up hopes that he is capable of getting it together and pulling off a win at the third leg of this year’s Triple Crown.
Spinoff (+1600)
Had it not for a disastrous 18th-place finish at the Kentucky Derby, Spinoff probably would be enjoying shorter odds to win the Belmont Stakes. Spinoff, who should have plenty of gas in his tank in the coming race at Elmont Park after skipping the Preakness Stakes, is trained by Todd Pletcher, a proven personality when it comes to rearing championship-caliber horses. Spinoff has four top three finishes in his career, including two wins at a maiden race in June of 2018 and at an allowance race back in February. Spinoff’s second-place finish at Louisiana Derby Grade 2 stakes is a compelling case for his chances to put up a sparkling effort at the Belmont Stakes.
