Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer, as usual, are the men to beat at the 2019 US Open, but you should still be thinking of the other players. A few of the fellas may have longer odds to win the tournament, but they have proven themselves to be capable of at least going deep in a Grand Slam. They are hungry and looking to wind down the season with a big win on U.S. soil (err…hard court). Nishikori has managed to win one title so far this 2019. While that’s not something that will blow our minds away, that win is notable because of the fact that it was a hard court victory at the Brisbane International. After that, Nishikori went to the quarterfinals of the 2019 Australian Open, where his body betrayed him, retiring in the middle of the match against eventual champion Novak Djokovic due to fatigue. Nishikori is also said to be dealing with a breathing problem, but if he could recover from that, he should be a pesky opponent for anyone in Flushing Meadows.Nishikori has made the semifinals of the last two US Opens he had participated.
Wawrinka is a feisty competitor who knows what it takes to succeed in Flushing Meadows. After all, he’s won there before, winning the 2016 US Open men’s singles title. Wawrinka has a solid background at the US Open, as he has reached the semifinals of the tournament three times and has played in the quarterfinals five times since 2010.
Anderson has yet to win a Grand Slam in his career, but he’s always there competing at a high level. Last year, Anderson managed to book a spot in the Round of 16 of the 2018 US Open. A year prior to that, the South African finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal, who beat Anderson in three sets.The 33 year old is 8-2 in ATP matches on the hard court this 2019.
