Betting on the Texas Longhorns (odds)
Record: 13-6 Overall / 7-5 Conference
Texas took a stumble in its last game, as the Longhorns lost to the West Virginia Mountaineers at home on Feb. 20, 84-82. Texas appeared to have total control of that game in the first half but floundered in the second half with several turnovers and a defense that allowed West Virginia to get back by taking a ton of trips to the free-throw line. Still, the Longhorns went 14 of 26 from deep in that game. They are currently third in the Big 12 with a 36.2 3-point shooting percentage. The Longhorns went bonkers from downtown in their 79-77 home loss to Texas Tech as 1-point favorites on Jan. 13, hitting 13 threes on 25 attempts. The Longhorns, who will face the Kansas Jayhawks this Tuesday, have hit at least 12 3-pointers in five games this season. Andrew Jones led the Longhorns in that game with 20 points, but more is needed from the bench that scored only four points against the Red Raiders.
Texas is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10 road games.
Betting on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (odds)
Record: 14-8 Overall / 6-7 Conference
Texas Tech is struggling to close out the regular season with wins. The Red Raiders have lost all of their last three games against the West Virginia Mountaineers, the Kansas Jayhawks, and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Their 73-69 overtime loss in Stillwater last Monday saw the Red Raiders continue their struggle with the long ball. They shot 5 of 15 from deep for the second game in a row and made only 42.4 percent of their shots from the field. Nevertheless, Texas Tech is always a threat to explode on offense. For one, the Red Raiders have Mac McClung, who had 22 points and five rebounds in the January win over Texas. Texas Tech shot only 41.7 percent from the field in that game but didn’t allow Texas to do any much better, either, as the Longhorns posted just a 42.6 field-goal percentage.
Texas Tech, which is allowing only 63.4 points per game, has seen the total hit the over in three of its last four outings.
Writer’s Prediction
Texas Tech wins, 72-70.
