Betting on the Seattle Seahawks (+2.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
Russell Wilson wants his protection unit to be better, and that’s one thing the Seahawks will check if they have addressed that adequately in the offseason with these preseason games. Last season, the Seahawks ranked 29th in offensive sack percentage, so Wilson was reasonable in demanding a better o-line in front of him. Wilson might play a drive or two against the Raiders, which means it’s going to be Geno Smith, Alex McGough, and Sean Mannion who will be able to tell more if the Seahawks have made any strides in that department. That is also why one of the most interesting players to watch for Seattle in the offseason is rookie left tackle Stone Forsythe. He could look good against Las Vegas’ pass rush that was among the worst in 2020. Wide receiver Dwayne Eskridge will also have the attention on him, as he looks to make noise in his first year in the NFL.
The Seahawks are 5-5 against the spread in their last 10 preseason games.
Betting on the Las Vegas Raiders (-2.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
If the Seahawks had problems with their offensive line last season, it was the other way around for Las Vegas in 2020. The Raiders then had above-average pass protection but a toothless pass rush that averaged just 1.3 sacks per game — third-worst in the NFL. Linebacker Tanner Muse will look to be among the solution to that defensive problem of the Raiders as he returns from an injury that caused him to miss the entire 2020 campaign. On offense, the Raiders will turn to the combo of Marcus Mariota, Nathan Peterman, and probably Case Cookus as well for much of the quarterbacking duties against the Seahawks. Raiders start tight end Darren Wallace has been missing days in training camp for an undisclosed reason, and if that’s related to health, these preseason games will be a good gauge for the readiness of Foster Moreau to step on a bigger role.
The Raiders are 7-3 in their last 10 games against the spread.
Writer’s Prediction
The Raiders win, 23-21.
