Betting on the Dallas Mavericks (+5)
Regular Season Record: 52-30
There’s nothing you could tell the Mavs to discourage them from this point forward. Not after the way they bucked the odds and dismantled the Phoenix Suns in the second round, punctuating that series with a 123-90 victory on the road. That was a Suns team that did not lose just nine games at home back in the regular season. Having conquered the Suns in the most unfriendly territory in the NBA this season, the Mavs should have all the confidence in the world that they could nail Game 1 against the Warriors. Plus, there’s the fact that Dallas went 3-1 straight up versus the Warriors in the regular season, including a 107-101 road win last February. In those games, Luka Doncic led the Mavs (who else?) with 31.5 points on 47.6 percent shooting from the field. Spencer Dinwiddie played in two of those contests and put up 20.5 points average. Dinwiddie has been spectacular of late after some difficulties with his shot in the early goings of the Phoenix series. Dinwiddie has scored 15.7 points on a sizzling 64.0 percent shooting from the field and 62.6 percent from deep in Dallas’ last three.
The Mavericks are 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Golden State Warriors (-5)
Regular Season Record: 53-29
The Warriors upended the Memphis Grizzlies in the second round in six games. They also have yet to drop a game at home in the playoffs. In beating the Grizzlies, Golden State turned to its defense to take down the young and hungry crew of Ja Morant. The Grizzlies shot just 41.8 percent from the field while posting a 107.8 defensive rating – third-best among all teams in the second round. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are no longer spring chickens but they are still very deadly on offense. Curry is leading the Warriors in the playoffs with 26.9 points per game, while Thompson is putting up 20.4 percent. There’s also a youth movement in Golden State, led by Jordan Poole, who’s been an exceptional source of offense for the Warriors’ bench, as he is coming up with 19.3 points on 50 percent shooting in the playoffs. Golden State is the more consistent team on offense between it and the Mavs, who’ve been susceptible to being too dependent on Doncic.
The Warriors are 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Warriors win, 109-104.
