Betting on the Tampa Bay Rays (+1.5)
Record: 35-26
The Rays absorbed a 2-0 loss in the first game of this series against the Bronx Bombers Tuesday night. The offense was simply not there for Tampa Bay, who entered the game with 15 runs scored over the previous three outings. The Rays hope that their bats will come out alive tonight to provide ample run support for Shane McClanahan, who didn’t need a bunch of runs to come away with a victory the last time he faced the Yankees. McClanahan, who is 7-2 with a 1.87 ERA and 0.86 WHIP this season, pitched for 6.0 innings and fanned 7 hitters with just an earned run on 7 hits in a 4-2 home win over New York on May 29. Tampa Bay has gone 7-0 in McClanahan’s last seven appearances. Kevin Kiermaier could star for the Rays’ offense tonight, as he has a career 3/6 line against Nestor Cortes with 3 RBIs and a walk in that matchup.
The Rays are 10-1 in their last 11 Wednesday games.
Betting on the New York Yankees (-1.5)
Record: 45-16 Conference
Nestor Cortes is one of the best surprises of the 2022 MLB season. He is 5-2 with a 1.96 ERA and 0.92 WHIP across 11 starts. While he is coming off a rare loss in which he allowed 4 earned runs on 7 hits in 4.1 innings of an 8- road defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Twins on June 8, Cortes is coming back to the Bronx where he’s been sizzling all season long. In fact, Cortes is 2-0 in five starts at Yankee Stadium. Over that span, Cortes has allowed just 5 earned runs on 16 hots with 8 walks issued across 30.0 innings. But even if he fails to bring his best stuff, the Yankees’ offense almost always has New York’s pitchers’ backs. The Yankees are no. 1 in the majors in both wRC+ (120) and wOBA (.335).
The Under is 4-0-1 in the Yankees’ last Game 2s of a series.
Writer’s Prediction
The Yankees win, 4-3.
