MLB Picks and Predictions for Monday, August 11, 2014

Los Angeles Angels Dodgers vs. Atlanta Braves (7:00 PM ET)

Line: Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves – see all MLB lines

[sc:MLB240banner ]Kevin Correia (5-13, 4.94 ERA) debuts tonight for Los Angeles against the Braves, whom the Dodgers have beaten in all of their last five meetings.

The Dodgers may find it tough to win their sixth straight against Atlanta, though, as they’ll play probably without outfielder Yasiel Puig and shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who are both nursing injuries. On top of that, the Braves will start Julio Teheran (10-8, 2.92 ERA), who is 4-1 with a 1.48 ERA in his last 11 outings at Turner Field.

Writer’s prediction:  Atlanta beats the Dodgers.

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles (7:05 PM ET)

Line: New York Yankees (+127) at Baltimore Orioles (-137); total: 8.5 – see all MLB lines

The Yankees will look to avert a three-game skid tonight as they start Chris Capuano (1-2, 3.91 ERA) against the slugging Orioles (18 homers thus far this month).

Although he is 0-1 in his last three starts, Capuano appears to have the stuff to silence Baltimore. The left-handed pitcher has yet to allow a homer in 19 innings of work since being acquired by the Yankees last July. Meanwhile, the Orioles will have Bud Norris (9-7, 3.68 ERA), who has gone 5-2 with a 2.64 ERA in his last eight starts. Baltimore is also 4-1 in its last five meetings with the Yankees.

Writer’s prediction:  Capuano cools off the O’s, as he leads the Yankees to a win.

Detroit Tigers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (7:05 PM ET)

Line: Detroit Tigers (-115) at Pittsburgh Pirates (+105) total: 7.5 – see all MLB lines

Justin Verlander (10-10, 4.57 ERA) has been struggling to find his form this season but a start against a National League squad like the Pirates may bring back his spunk.

Verlander is 4-0 with a 1.97 ERA in his last four starts against Pittsburgh. More impressive is his 25-2 record and 2.73 ERA in his last 32 regular season starts against NL teams. Verlander will matchup with the Pirates’ Jeff Locke (3-3, 3.78 ERA), who’s been a tough cookie to break at PNC Park. The Pirates are 5-0 in Locke’s last five home starts.

Writer’s prediction: The Tigers pick up a win against Pittsburgh.

Oakland Athletics vs. Kansas City Royals (8:10 PM ET)

Line: Oakland Athletics (-122) at Kansas City Royals (+112); total: 7.0 – see all MLB lines

The streaking Royals are coming off a 7-4 win against San Francisco last night to improve to 7-0 in their last seven games. A win tonight could get them to the top of the AL Central for the first time in 11 years.

However, they’ll have to do it against arguably the best team in baseball in the Oakland A’s. The A’s are 3-1 in their last four games, and have an 8-2 record in their last 10 meetings with Kansas City.

Writer’s prediction:  Royals notch their eighth straight victory.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Seattle Mariners (10:10 PM ET)

Line: Toronto Blue Jays (+170) at Seattle Mariners (-200); total: 6.5 – see all MLB lines

Felix Hernandez

The Blue Jays are set to face Felix Hernandez (12-3, 1.97 ERA) tonight, but don’t expect them to get intimidated, especially after taking care of other Cy Young winners like Max Scherzer and David Price to win two games in their previous three-game series against Detroit.

Still, Hernandez is no pushover, having allowed just two runs or fewer in his last 15 starts. The Blue Jays are 3-1 in their last four games at Safeco Field, while the Mariners are 6-2 in Hernandez’s last eight starts.

Writer’s prediction: The Blue Jays overcome Hernandez, and picks up their third straight victory.
