Betting on the Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers are back in the win column after defeating the pesky Utah Jazz, 107-101, Monday night. As usual, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul led the team to the victory. Griffin had another monster game, scoring 31 points and hauling down nine rebounds. Paul, on the other hand had a triple-double gem, totaling 13 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and adding 12 dimes to power the Clips.

[sc:NBA240banner ]The Clippers boast of a raft of weapons on offense, which is mostly left for Paul to sort out. Paul has options on the wings in J.J. Redick, Matt Barnes, and sixth-man Jamal Crawford. There’s also no lack of inside presence with Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan lurking near the basket. Griffin, though, has a much longer range than Jordan.

Combined with his speed and size, Griffin’s ability to drill down perimeter jumpers makes him a walking mismatch against the Warriors’ big men. Jordan, meanwhile, mostly picks up his points from plucking down offensive boards. Jordan is a beast on the glass, averaging 9.3 RPG and 4.0 ORPG. He’ll also play the role of a deterrent against the Warriors’ cutters. Jordan paces the team with 1.8 BPG.

One thing the Clippers aren’t doing well is preventing teams from scoring a boatload of points in the clutch moments of the game. Against Sacramento, the Clippers allowed the Kings to score 13 points in the last five minutes of the game. They also surrendered 13 points to Utah during the same stretch in the next outing.

A close game down the stretch doesn’t sound favorable for the Clippers judging from their late-game meltdowns. The Warriors are averaging 16.0 points so far this season in the last five minutes of the game with either team leading or trailing, the most by any team under the same circumstances.

The Clippers are 0-5 ATS in their last five games overall.

Betting on the Golden State Warriors

Andre Iguodala, Klay Thompson

Opposing teams know that Golden State’s offense will mostly come from Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. But they just can’t stop them no matter what kind of defense they throw at the duo. During the team’s latest game, Curry scored 21, while Thompson dropped in 29 to power the Warriors to a close 95-90 win over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Thompson is averaging 29.7 PPG, while Curry submits 25.3 PPG. Together, they make up more than half of the team’s 105.7 PPG average, fifth best in the NBA. The Warriors attack their opponents in a variety of ways, keeping their opponents guessing defensively. There are players who can drive to the gut of the defense like Curry, Thompson, Leandro Barbosa, and Andre Iguodala, all of whom are also skilled drive-and-kick passers who can dish the leather to an open shooter. The Warriors are averaging 24.3 APG.

Golden State’s floor spacing allows the Warriors to find cracks in the opponents’ interior defense. The Warriors are fourth best in the NBA in inside scoring with 28.0 PPG in the shaded area, excluding fast breaks. Speaking of fast breaks, they are also putting up 23.0 PPG on the breakaway.

The Warriors are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.

Writer’s Prediction

Golden State wins, 110-104.
