Betting on the San Antonio Spurs

[sc:NBA240banner ]The San Antonio Spurs have been making it look easy lately. They successfully won the first two games of their three-game road trip and will be aiming to make it a clean sweep when they pay the Washington Wizards a visit at Verizon Center this evening.

In their last game against the Knicks, the Spurs received an all-around effort from their starting unit as four of them scored in double-digits. Leading the way was the pair of Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge, who both combined for 37 points and 20 rebounds.

Leonard, though, had the most stellar outing among the rest. He didn’t just deliver on offense but lived up to his name as the reigning Defensive Player of the Year by locking down one the league’s premier scorers in Carmelo Anthony, who went 4-for-17 in that game.

Now, for the Spurs to end their road trip on a winning note, the onus will be on Leonard again to lock up another scoring threat in John Wall, who is posting 22.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists so far this year. But he’ll also have to worry about another offensive weapon in Bradley Beal, who is averaging a team-high 25.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

As for the offense, the duo of Tony Parker and Tim Duncan could be in full effect later. Parker contributed 16 points and three dimes against the Knicks and is averaging 17.5 points and 6.4 assists across 24 career games against the Wizards. Duncan, meanwhile, has fared well in the same matchup, posting career numbers of 16.2 points and 9.9 boards.

San Antonio is 6-4 SU and ATS in its last 10 road games.

Betting on the Washington Wizards

John Wall

The Washington Wizards failed in their attempt to start their season 3-0 for the first time since the 2005-06 season. They were edged out by the Knicks, 117-110, on Saturday night thanks to a sensational performance from superstar Carmelo Anthony, who exploded for a staggering 37 points.

John Wall and Bradley Beal, though, made sure that the Wizards didn’t go silently into the night. The backcourt duo combined for 51 points, seven rebounds and three steals to keep things close till the very end. There was also Otto Porter Jr., who provided some quality contributions with 16 points and nine boards.

But what’s done is done and the Wizards will look to bounce back from this tough defeat when the San Antonio Spurs come to town. For them to emerge on top, the offense can’t just keep relying on Wall and Beal to do the dirty work. It has to be a team effort.

That said, Porter Jr. and Marcin Gortat need to make some noise. Porter Jr. has a good chance to build on his performance against the Knicks as the Spurs’ defense will definitely have most of their attention focused on the Wizards’ two guards. Gortat, meanwhile, has been a double-double machine in his career opposite San Antonio, owning averages of 10.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

Also, Drew Gooden could provide that much-needed boost off the bench for them. Gooden had 11 points and 11 rebounds in their last game. His presence also allows the Wizards to stretch the floor with his respectable mid-range game.

Washington is 6-4 SU and 4-5-1 ATS in its previous 10 games at home.
